Edward Ivey admitted bagging a deer out of season and hiding it by a snow bank to reach home. Ed Mahaffy with the car later took the carcass, carrying it away. Ivey and Mahaffy were fined 825 and 850 respectively, with Mahaffy also receiving a venison dinner prior to the penalty.
Keota high school's charter agriculture class now has three seniors Erland Sieren Jim Reed and Jim Watson each active in farming. They built a potato planter from scrap and the new ag shop enables larger projects. All three and instructor Myles Beitz earned Iowa Farmer Degree and will attend the KFA convention in Des Moines April 16 to 18.
Niles Daily Times publisher James L. Wick said his Russia tour showed distortions in American reporting. He and nine editors found Moscow a propaganda showplace and argued progress there contradicts common American depictions. He warned truth could unsettle capitalism and expose communist inefficiency.

Chicago reports indicate the Haber Corporation factory blast may reach 38 dead. Fire crews recovered 20 bodies, found three more in debris, and 15 workers remained unaccounted for after the Thursday explosion. The Republican led Iowa Senate refused to confirm Democrat Russell F Swift of Harlan to the Iowa Liquor Control Commission. Swift had held the six year post since 1941 with three prior reappointments. A two thirds confirmation rule had been passed but not signed. Beardsley may nominate another candidate or wait until adjournment.
Henry W. Grunewald testifies before a House subcommittee that he once received 7500 to introduce a Toledo textile maker in tax trouble to a Chicago attorney. He denies any $60,000 bribe, saying fish given at Union Station represented no such sum and was wrapped in brown paper from a New York source famed for sturgeon.
The final Community Forum at the high school is scheduled for Thursday evening April 23 at 8 o'clock. It will feature members of the State University of Iowa music department.
Vaughn Wade Smith appeared before Justice H. M. Putnam bound over to the grand jury under a $1000 bond on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Donald Hole, 19, Wellman, was scheduled to face Justice Putnam later that afternoon on a larceny charge.
Winga’s North Side cafe marks 25 years of ownership at the same Washington location with the Silver Anniversary celebration for customers this Saturday. The restaurant has operated over 40 years in the same site under G. E. Cook and later Hugh Dougall, becoming a well known midwest stop for travelers and locals alike. John Winga Jr. is away at college, but the family of John Sr., Mrs. Winga, Edward, and Rehard continue managing the cafe. Silver Anniversary favors will be given to customers.
The House Appropriations Committee began the drive to balance the budget by slashing 61 percent from the 1954 request, stopping all new public housing and approving 451 million for 24 independent agencies. The action avoids reducing current beneficiaries but signals lessons in fiscal restraint.
Sixty six Washington high school seniors with faculty advisors left Thursday night for Chicago on their annual senior class trip. They will see the sights in Chicago and return home Saturday night. The trip was again made on chartered buses.
Funeral services for Whitfield Davis were held at 2 PM Thursday in Salem church with Rev. Ernest Smith presiding. Pallbearers included Grant Davis Newton Davis Towyn Davis Emryr Owen Gomer Owen and Ernest Jones. John Hughes sang with Sara Davis as soloist. Burial followed in Cambrian Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge.

Adlai E. Stevenson praised Eisenhower's peace program as admirable at a Singapore press conference. He said the three Asia wars show a determined effort to resist Communist expansion by force and noted Indonesia and Malaya face difficulties toward self government. He called his helicopter landing in Malaya sheer luck.

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told Congress the United States rejects any U N trusteeship for Formosa. He stated, contradicting reports, that all current policies oppose such a trusteeship and that recent actions are not aimed at that goal. He testified before House and Senate committees seeking terms for an honorable armistice in Korea.
Junior high Parent-Teachers group will meet Monday evening at 8 o clock in the school building. The evening features the seven grade play Headline Hunters and a cancer education film distributed by the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services for Mrs. Robert L. Muench were held at 1 30 pm Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home led by Dr C R Reed with pallbearers Gene Gorham C V Crull Rude Tanner John Lee Earl Loveless and William Tweeten. Burial followed in Oakville Cemetery.
