Paris reports Leon Trotsky, exiled Soviet leader, must leave France and seeks asylum in the United States or other parts of the western hemisphere. He writes continuously, fearing assassination as French ministers demand his departure due to his revolutionary activity.
A Peoria trucker, Valentine, lost 63 cases of eggs and a truck after hi-jackers seized his vehicle near Wapello. The truck, found destroyed by fire on an old road north of Wapello, had eggs transferred to another truck as tracks indicated.
C O C will hear Burlington Chamber of Commerce secretary W Bond address Friday evening. Bond, a veteran in community work, will share insights from the Chamber’s long experience. Secretary Clarence Logan will report on Washington organization activities at the YMCA rooms event. Tickets available from Logan or committees. open to all members.
Definite plans were made for a city softball league of eight teams at a meeting at the Y last night. Opening games April 30 feature Christian church vs All Nations and Troop against the Little Demons, with May 1 games Methodist vs Masy Aces and Gerson vs the Pearls. Commission will manage the league, Jed Stow as manager, Clarence Logan and Leigh Soule secretaries. Teams must list 18 players by May 7 and provide two umpires per game.
Mrs. Mary Rhea died Saturday at the home of her daughter Mrs We Alexander in Walla Walla Washington while her husband or family remained in Washington. She was a sister of Mrs Geo Amlong of Washington and had returned west with her daughter following a serious illness.
Des Moines April 17. Russell Hyland 40 of Clive Iowa died when his car struck a Milwaukee train near Des Moines city limits. The car was hit broadside and carried over 100 feet along the track.
Washington city council passed a ten percent reduction in water rates for the current quarter with payment due June first. The discount applies if bills are paid before the tenth, otherwise current rates apply. A two percent sales tax will be added at next payment. The move funds bond payments and reflects efficient Plant management. The council also discussed surfacing streets with crushed rock from the Dalley quarry and authorized cost investigations.
The Rotary Club honored oratorical winners Miss Helen Masson and Miss Marjorie Robertson at a regular meeting. Masson won first place and received a Rotary medal. Robertson took second and a three dollar prize. Robertson spoke on The Highways of Peace and Masson on The Third Generation.
At a recent meeting renewals were approved for Frank Casey and Hugh Dougall restaurants the Candy Kitchen the Recreation area and the Diamond Inn. They secured initial permits April 20 last year and faced renewal after one year. The Chocolate Shop obtained its permit later and its year is not yet complete.
Boy Scouts gathered at the Scout park for a campfire get-together. Rex Hazen's patrol leads a six week contest with an overnight hike prize. A chain story game highlighted Ken Ton Kurtz and Harold Davis as heroes.
James Norman Hall endured a near drowning when his vessel was wrecked on a remote island 900 miles from Tahiti while collecting material for a new book. The incident, narrated by his mother Mrs. Ella A. Hall of Galfax, describes a stormy night and a perilous voyage, with the crew saved after landing and provisions secured. Hall’s prior wartime service included time in the British army and the American flying service in France.
Charles Mannhardt born in Washington will be ordained a priest May 10 in Davenport Cathedral. He is the son of Dan W. and Mrs Mannhardt, now in Mast Pleasant Plain. He will offer his first mass May 14 at East Pleasant Plain and May 20 at St James in Washington after earning a BA from St Ambrose College Davenport.

In Eldon Missouri on April 17 two Rock Island railway detectives J W Whitted and C Shane were shot to death in a pistol duel on top of freight cars between Bland and Eldon. The three accused negroes fled the scene leaving Whitted's body on a car and Shane wounded beside the track. Six transients on the train were detained as investigators pursued the suspects.
April 17 report on a plot to kidnap Professor Jacob Vandersee a municipal ownership advocate. Police say a warning call was received and Vandersee attended a mass meeting with police escort as voters decided the power plant issue.
Florida expects about $4,000,000 more from its T-cent tax in the first four months of this year than the same period in 1932. The jump is attributed to a tremendous increase in tourist travel during the winter months.
London April 17 Great Britain will not pay war debts to the United States pending negotiations for revision or cancellation Chancellor Neville Chamberlain announced while presenting the 1944 35 budget to the House of Commons He noted a treasury surplus at April 1 of 160 567 000 and a projected current budget surplus of 149 000 000 with no war debt payments or reparations receipts in the budget The next debt installment due June 15 would be 85 670 000 though Britain has sent small token payments to Washington to avoid default amid rising industry output and falling unemployment fostering a hopeful outlook for the economy.
