Longtime Washington High manual arts teacher Bickel retires
W F Bickel has taught at Washington High for 36 years guiding manual arts students who built furniture from cedar chests to desks. He estimates 2500 to 3000 former pupils visit, and during WWII started a letter writing project that sent regular overseas letters to about 115 servicemen. He will not return after this year and plans a home shop for furniture rebuilding while remaining in Washington.

Mrs. John Hahn 49 Dies En Route to Hospital
Delpha Mabel Black Hahn died Saturday April 14 after a cerebral hemorrhage while en route to a hospital. Funeral services will be held April 18 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. LeRoy Pullman and burial in Keota Cemetery. She was born March 12 1907 in Rubio Iowa married John N Hahn January 2 1924 and leaves husband five children and four brothers and two sisters. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and is survived by five children, three grandchildren. Her son Robert Carroll Hahn preceded her in death.

Fires scorch two blazes near Columbus Junction
Firefighters battled a timber fire nine miles northwest of Columbus Junction, fanned by strong winds, from Saturday night into Sunday, burning over 200 acres. A second fire destroyed Glenn Sands farm home five miles south of town. residents were inside at the time, cause undetermined. Units from Columbus Junction, Wapello, Ainsworth, and Conesville guarded properties and kept watch overnight.

Latimer Davis was taken to a Lebanon hospital after his car was wrecked on the return trip from visiting his daughter in Lebanon. Also injured were Nina Hughes of Prairie City and Ada Van Dyke of Columbus Junction. Davis sustained a broken collar bone, broken ribs, and facial injuries. Van Dyke a broken sternum and ribs.
