Infuriated citizens erupt as a mob breaks into Joplin Missouri jail after a man accused in Officer Leslie's murder is captured. The attack follows threats to lynch and white residents flee, with authorities pleading for order. Unclear details persist about accomplices and the jail breach.
A mob in Joplin dragged a black man from the jail, tied a rope to a telephone pole, and hanged him despite pleas for a trial. The victim, a stranger in Joplin, was left suspended as authorities and reinforcements failed to halt the lynching. Coroner later claimed the body. fears of further violence rise. Belfast convention denounces parts of the Irish land bill and rejects altering the system of fair rents.
Springfield reports Charles Gillette appointed acting superintendent of the state institution for the deaf and dumb in Jacksonville replacing the late Dr Joseph C Gordon. Gillette is an inspector at the institution and son of former superintendent Dr Philip Gillette who led the school for 34 years. Helena Mont April 16 The attorney general’s opinion on a ministerial association gambling measure is unconstitutional per Judge Smith. It would have required peace officers to arrest violators when informed of violations.
In Cheyenne on April 16 investigators pursue Frank Knight of Omaha the man accused of ordering his wife Jennie Dusen's poisoning. Reports say the trap laid by pursuers will be sprung as Knight is believed to have eluded capture and may attempt flight or disguise while authorities tighten the case.
Madison April 14. Turton Hansen of Chicago for Milwaukee Railroad accuses T C Richmond of Madison of deliberate falsity in the assembly chamber during the railroad commission bill hearing. Richmond rushes Hansen but restrains himself and hurls defiant remarks as members crowd nearby to prevent a possible fight.
Boston April 16 8 N D North of this city has decided to accept the directorship of the United States census bureau the position offered by President Roosevelt in Washington.
Michigan City Indiana reports the hanging of Alexander a Black man from Terre Haute in the penitentiary cell between midnight and morning. Police and witnesses describe the somber scene as justice was carried out under state authorities.
