Mrs. Mary Evans of Birmingham was fined 5.60 dollars after attacking a teacher who gave her 12 year old daughter a poor grade. The complaint said she hit the teacher with a basket pulled her hair and dragged her across the desk. Evans had been honored recently by a TV program as a typ ical housewife.
Three cancer researchers reported at an American Association for Cancer Research meeting that living cancer implants in 65 Ohio State Penitentiary inmates and 20 Memorial Hospital volunteers showed differing rejection. Prisoners appeared to develop immunity to the same cancer upon a second implant, while Memorial volunteers lacking properdin struggled to reject implants.
A brief contest entry from the Washington Industrial Corporation promoting Washington as a prime site for new industry. The entry requests a slogan five words or less and offers a fifty dollar prize.
Newton Elmer Romine 94, a Keota area retired farmer, died at 5 a m in Twilight Rest Home after a two week illness. Funeral set for April 17 at 2 p m Powell Funeral Home Keota with burial in Keota Cemetery. Survived by son Ralph of Keota granddaughter Violet Johnson Ottawa ill grandson Roger Romine Cedar Falls four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Wife Mary Mayer preceded him in death along with four brothers and three sisters.
Washington County 4 H club will host about 40 4 H members from Haywood County NC next summer as part of a long running exchange series dating back to 1949 1950. The NC group will stay from June 29 to July 6 in Washington County.
The Iowa Senate moved toward enacting a plan requiring all counties to prepare school district reorganization by July 1 1958 with high school units by July 1 1962. The bill ties district changes to a state tax credit and a controversial sales tax fund for school aid, while House amendments sparked debate.
Khalidi unites pro Western Hussein and pro Soviet Nabulsi in a new Jordan government. The move followed Syria’s troop withdrawal and warnings to Israel amid regional tension. Maj. Gen. Ali Abu Nuwar was also removed to stabilize Hussein’s grip.
The Home Lumber and Feed Co. in Crawfordsville reports a weekend break in. About 525 dollars worth of seed, including 18 bushels of alfalfa and three of red clover plus another small seed, was stolen. Entry was gained by cutting the front door bolt with a bolt cutter. Harold Miller operates the firm.
Bill Norman president of the Washington County Beef Producers Association says he and several directors will attend the Iowa Beef Producers Association annual meeting in Ames next Monday. Anyone else wishing to attend should leave a name at the county extension office. USDA attache William Lodwick in Mexico will be the principal speaker. The group will tour the new beef nutrition farm near Ames.
Twelve Washington County 4-H boys traveled to Mt. Pleasant for a district crop judging workout. Gary Sheetz tied for top honors in crop seed weed seed and plant identification. Participants included Dave Norman Jerry Crossett Larry DeLong Jack Crone John Skubal Gary Sheetz Larry Marek Kenneth Kiene Richard Durst John Durst Jr Mike Durst and Doug Bell with chaperones Tom Robb Don Sheetz and John Durst.
A fire caused minor damage to the front door of the Atchison and Paul Shoe Store in Washington while smoke affected merchandise in the shoe store and Marshall's Furniture Store basement. Juane Miller alerted responders after seeing smoke around 9 p.m. Sunday. firemen contained the blaze quickly but smoke permeated the building, with mixed impacts on adjacent businesses and insurance adjusters assessing losses.
Funeral services for Charles L. Lonnie Baker were held Saturday at Wa verly Iowa with burial in Sumner Iowa. He died April 10 1957 in Waverly at age 86. Survivors include three children and several step children plus brothers and a sister.
The Chi caqua chapter of the Izaak Walton league will open its boat dock by Saturday April 20 announced by Harold Brock. He aims to have live bait for anglers. Chapter members plan a regular meeting Monday April 22 at 7 45 p.m. in the St James social hall with a trap shooting movie and key business on the agenda.
Everett Meekers hold a narrow lead in the U s Men's bridge marathon after 11 rounds, with a net 19 160 points. They trail Robert Reed by 40 points and top a top ten listing that includes Nina Stutsman Howard McCleery Lee Holland Harold Putnam Dan Brindley Elsie Glassburner T. A. Flenner George Stewart and the Dempsey pair.
In Omaha Nebraska Senator Thomas Martin an Independent IA said the Republican party will not be split. He argued Democrats want the party divided and rejected the idea of divisions between modern and traditional wings. The modern faction emphasizes sound domestic policy restrained federal spending taxation and debt while pursuing free enterprise and world peace.
John Winga county chairman reports $435.43 donated statewide for the Crippled Children's estate camp from last week's Coffee Day in Washington County cafes and restaurants. Washington city contributed $254.23. other towns provided the rest. The event was sponsored by the Iowa Restaurant Association.
At least four people died in Iowa over the weekend in separate crashes raising the 1957 toll to 151. The incidents included two teenagers killed in car train collisions near Linwood and De Witt, a Des Moines woman struck while crossing, and a Waterloo man killed when his car hit a bridge abutment. The week-end also left injuries to several others and a driver charged for license violations.
Walter Gormly a 42 year old Iowan and member of The Peacemakers writes President Eisenhower to refuse income taxes he says fund war machinery. He notes prior prison time for conscientious objection and says IRS has seized his property for tax debts. Two fellow Iowans are named in Earlham as non-payers.
The Waco Drive In Theatre will launch the summer season with a free show on Thursday April 18 and begin regular screenings Friday April 19. Manager E S Tompkins announces weekly changes, a back night, and a $1 car admission. A remodeling program will widen the screen by 24 feet repaint the facility and install new booth equipment to show Cinemascope productions.
Mrs. Mary Nycum 81 of Keota died at Twilight Rest Home in Keota at 5:25 a.m. Sunday April 14 1957 after four weeks illness. Funeral at Keota Federated Church Tuesday 2 p.m. Rev Elmer Bostow officiating. Burial in Keota Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Dorothy Chambers grandson George Chambers and several stepchildren and siblings.
In Cleveland a 24 year old gunman Steven Thomas and 19 year old Wanda Di Cenzi were charged with malicious entry after a hidden camera recorded their holdup of the St Clair Savings and Loan Co. They admitted stealing 2376 dollars. about 600 remained unrecovered. Thomas surrendered after fleeing to Indianapolis where TV broadcasts followed the case.
In Alton Illinois a 15 year old, Charles McFarlane, stabbed his grandmother Velma McFarlane 51 with a butcher knife while she slept after she scolded him for not fixing the furnace. She died en route to a hospital.
Delbert Strabala 66 of Richmond died at 7 a.m. today April 15 1957 at Brown Rest Home Wellman after months of ill health. Funeral arrangements are pending at Peterseim Funeral Home Kalona. He was born in Richmond to Phillip and Amelia Haig Strabala and lived there his whole life. He belonged to Holy Trinity Catholic Church Richmond. Survivors include daughters Margaret Stokely Tacoma Louise Elgin Illinois and Joan in Alaska.
The first stag of the season will be held at the Washington Golf and Country Club Friday evening. Reservations must be made by 6 p.m. Thursday by telephone. Open to members and guests as spring weather draws local golfers back to the course.
