Alberta town of Frank orders removal of offices and stores after provincial warning of rock slides. Frost thaw imminent, risk of property damage and loss of life prompts mass evacuation by local business community.
Thirty one Bradley Polytechnic Institute students on a plant tour at the Woolner distillery in Peoria Wisconsin were injured when a platform in the fermenting room collapsed sending them about 30 feet to a concrete floor. Ten of the injured were reported seriously hurt.
In a dramatic Republican battle Theodore Roosevelt defeats the Penrose machine. About 55 of 64 district national delegates will back Roosevelt for Chicago. State delegates also swing to Roosevelt as Penrose loses control. Taft wins few counties. Democrats carry Wilson statewide.
President Taft's tax return filed at Hamilton County courthouse shows a $30 700 increase in taxable property from last year. He now has $56 000 in stocks, down from $10 000, cash dropped from $5 720 to $840, and debts at $6 500, bringing total property value to $51 940.
An explosion destroyed the gas engine power house of the Illinois Steel company at East Eighty-sixth Street and the Calumet river, damaging over 100,000 dollars in property. Flames and debris forced a large fire response as alarms were issued. no fatalities were reported due to warning by a worker who smelled gas.
In Lanchou, Tanau province, Muslims swore by acclamation to die rather than abandon their land. They plan a 500000 strong fighting force to oppose efforts by the republic to exterminate them, alarming government circles.
London sees a brewing industrial dispute as chorus girls press for a minimum salary. The Amalgamated Musicians union backs the effort, circulating demands to theatrical managers. The target is seven dollars for six evening performances and one dollar per matinee.
Caskets holding Leonard Gross and Leroy Cannon, executed in 1909 by ex President Zelaya of Nicaragua, have been shipped from Managua to New Orleans via Senaor Velasquez the Nicaraguan consul. From New York the caskets will go to the men’s homes in Texas and Pennsylvania.
In Harrington Park New Jersey a partially completed Church of Our Lady of Victory floor collapsed during a corner stone laying. Three people died and 14 were seriously injured as hundreds fell into the basement. Firefighters and volunteers worked about an hour to rescue victims.
The twenty first congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution convened at Memorial Continental Hall with Mrs. Matthew T. Scott presiding. Feud between Mrs. Scott and Mrs. William Cummings Story factions promises a lively session amid calls for a safe Fourth of July and uniform flag laws. A reception to the Daughters by President Taft and President Scott is planned, with further entertainments for delegates.
North Carolina will send 16 delegates to Roosevelt and eight to Taft at the national convention. John M. Morehead state chairman announced the plan after leaders met to reorganize the party. The current plan prorates convention votes by candidate strength.
Representative Bulkley of Ohio has introduced a bill to coin a copper nickel three cent piece with a hole in the middle. The coin would be slightly larger than a cent and legal tender up to 30 cents, needed in Cleveland where streetcar fares run three cents.
A fire swept a retail block in Omaha causing 356000 dollars in damage. Fireworks exploded and panic broke out in the streets as thousands fled. A manager was cut by flying glass while he attempted to retrieve cash from a register.
Ex Senator Nathan B. Scott of West Virginia visiting Berlin with Mrs Scott surprised locals by his democratic manner. A hotel clerk recounts Scott slapping him on the back and asking for mail, shocking staff during their stop en route to Russia.
Hemingford Nebraska April 16. In one of the worst blizzards this part of the state Mrs Richard Path living north of here started out with her eight year old son to drive cattle to shelter They lost their way and although a searching party has been scouring the district no trace of them can be found.
The president signed legislation taxing white phosphorus matches to ban their manufacture. Lawmakers argued the matches harm workers in the production process and the move aims to curb hazardous labor.
A devastating tornado struck Selassus Knoblick and Farmington Missouri on April 15. It killed three people including an eleven year old in Knoblick and a fifty five year old in Delassus, with numerous injuries and widespread destruction across Delassus, Knoblick, and Farmington. The Francois County electric railway was knocked out of service and several homes barns and fences were demolished with unroofed houses and uprooted trees along a three mile strip.
American League games show St Louis 1 Detroit 1 and Cleveland 6. no other games scheduled. National League lists St Louis vs Cincinnati and pitching notes. American Association mentions Louisville 2 and St Paul Columbus with Nebraska City and Minneapolis scores.
