Indiana Lieutenant Governor Harold Handley was stopped for driving 42 miles per hour in a 30 zone. He then learned he had left his driver's license at home and was ordered to appear in court next week.
Five Israeli soldiers were wounded when their vehicle hit two mines in Israeli territory near the Gaza border at 11 20 a m local time. Two more Israelis were wounded in related border incidents as a shepherd was shot near Bengurion and youth shot near Mt Zion. Security reports note cross border gunfire and Jordanian patrols.
Members of the Simpson College choir will perform a half hour of sacred music during the morning worship hour at Washington Methodist Church on Sunday. A short worship service is also planned by pastor Dr. Watler Scheuermaan.
Iowa City plans for a U S highway 6 bypass may be dropped as City Manager Peter F. Rowan cites difficulty obtaining right of way. Construction in the year is postponed with no definite assurance the bypass will be built as property owners along the route demand high prices.
Crawfordsville high school sends a large group to Stockport for the state music contest. The girls sextet includes Mary Wirene Gwyneth Jones Roberta Henderson Jo Ann McNeill Allaire Davis and Phyllis Lowe. The mixed quartet features Dan Cherryholmes Roberta Henderson Linda Edgar and Larry Curtis. Vocal soloists are Roberta Henderson JoAnn McNeill Phyllis Lowe Linda Edgar Delores Schaeffer Larry Curtis Helen Leichty Wilma Krantz. Accompanists are Allaire Davis Gwyneth Jones Lois Anne Engle and Karla Spangler.
Mrs John Hahn of a residence south of Washington died about noon today. The body is at Jones Funeral Home as arrangements for services remain indefinite.
Washington County beef producers plan to attend the Iowa Beef Producers Convention on April 17 at Hotel Savery in Des Moines. Marion Augustine, president, says J C Holbert of Iowa will preside, with speakers including John Milton of the American Meat Institute and Albert Mitchell, president of the International Livestock Exposition.
Teacher James Ribbeck has completed arrangements for the annual senior trip to Chicago. Washington High School seniors will travel by chartered buses on April 19, 20 and 21 with more than 75 students and accompanying staff including Paul Strathman James Hervey Mrs Marcia Molis Lois Etzen and Principal Carl Paetz. They depart at 11 p.m. Thursday and return Saturday night.
John Landy moves to seek Australian AAU approval to fly to the United States ahead of his May 5 Los Angeles mile race. The 3 58 world record holder has agreed to two U S invitations to run open miles at UCLA USC on May 5 and the West Coast Relays in Fresno May 12, triggering an international sports dispute.
Harold E. Walkner a 41 year old Rockwell junk dealer was found guilty of buying and selling stolen property in Mason City Iowa. Judge Tom Boynton set May 25 for sentencing and Walkner was free on a 1500 dollar bond. The case stems from purchasing a car believed stolen from Jack Harriott who allegedly sold it to Walkner.
County Republican Women attend first district spring meeting of the Iowa Council of Republican Women on April 19 at the American Legion Hall West Liberty. Registration at 9 45 a.m. business session morning reports include secretary Mrs Willa Weldin of Washington. State president Elsie Evans will speak at 11 a.m. After luncheon the afternoon session features introductions of state Republican candidates and an address by Bill McCuen secretary of the state GOP central committee.

Irene Kenney wife of Kenney's Bar and Grill operator was shot twice by a customer Roland Van Nest 52 after being ordered out. She remained in fair condition at University Hospitals. Kenney subdued Van Nest with a pistol blow. Van Nest injured. Johnson County Attorney planned charges pending injury assessment.
Specialist 3 C Hart of Denver got a three day pass beginning Friday the 13th. He rode a garbage truck into Seoul and fell from it injuring his ankle, found no wallet when buying lunch, waited four hours for a call, and later recovered his wallet with $84.60.
Administration sources indicate President Eisenhower may veto the Democratic farm bill, seek moderate price support boosts, and if needed call a special session after conventions. Wheat and corn would be targeted to aid farmers and stabilize markets. House Leader Martin expects a veto and warns Congress not to adjourn without action.
A large crowd attended the second and final presentation of this year’s Washington High School senior class play Friday evening. James Hervey, director of George Washington Slept Here, was presented with a gift from cast members. Edgar Jones made the presentation. Dick Boettcher provided organ music between acts.

Nat King Cole, a black singer, drew a thunderous standing ovation in Raleigh North Carolina after a mixed audience welcomed his comeback performance at Municipal Auditorium. Fans filled the venue despite prior Birmingham beating and segregated ticket blocks as Cole framed his tour as a pursuit of dignity rather than politics.
Thieves stole jewels valued at 50000 dollars from Matthew McCloskey’s hotel room at the Hotel de Paris in Monaco during the Prince Rainier Grace Kelly wedding visit. The gems in a red velvet case were taken while he and his wife dined, with a second more valuable case left untouched. The jewels belonged to Mrs. McCloskey.
Burlington District Methodist Youth Fellowship plans a rally at Washington Methodist Church on Sunday with registration at 2 30 p m for high school and older youth. Dr Jerry Walker of St James Methodist Chicago will speak at both sessions and Rev Larry Jones of Fort Madison Santa Fe Methodist chairs the program.

UPI reports Sen Estes Kefauver and Adlai Stevenson rally across Florida for the Democratic presidential primary. They exchange good natured jabs and campaign buttons in Tampa while Stevenson heads to Pensacola for a Gulf Coast TV speech and Kefauver campaigns Miami. both vie for Florida’s 28 convention votes next Tuesday.
In Springfield Massachusetts a man entered Frank Anzallotti s package store and bought a pint of wine using ten nickels minted in 1883.
Pvt. Charles L. Reilly 18 Clyde New York wrote a friend that a drill instructor forced him to drink 19 bottles of soda as punishment. He said soft drinks were forbidden to recruits and the instructor caught him with a bottle at the post exchange. Reilly and five others drowned during a night march at Parris Island South Carolina.
Robert Carroll Eyestone of Washington Iowa is among 48 Iowa boys chosen for the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps for the 1956 fall term. He will receive a four year college scholarship and serve as midshipman until graduation before being commissioned Ensign with a three year active duty plan. Eyestone is a Washington High School senior and son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Eyestone.
U N secretary general Dag Hammarskjold finishes a four day Cairo stay with a stop war meeting with President Nasser and Foreign Minister Fawzi. Cairo sources doubt Israeli acceptance of any plan until Ben Gurion agrees to troop withdrawals along the Arab Israel border.
Former Democratic Vice President Henry A Wallace said he will vote for Dwight D. Eisenhower in the coming election. He cited peace as the key issue and praised Adlai Stevenson while noting his admiration for Stevenson’s speeches.
Mrs. Gerrit Ivens of Davenport pleaded guilty to assault with intent to injure after shooting her husband within minutes of his divorce on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. She received one year in prison and parole to her attorney while the husband was shot three times in the leg three weeks earlier.
