John B P Rosenstreter, of Toledo, has a nightly habit of peeking under his bed. On Monday he spotted a prowler after the routine check, fetched his rifle, and alerted police who arrested the intruder for breaking and entering.
The sifting committee approved a one cent gas tax increase to five cents per gallon for two years and a one cent rise in the cigarette tax to three cents a pack. Projected revenue supports highway modernization and the public employees retirement fund, with debates on road allocations and an educational television study.
Preparations for the Lake Darling youth center season include boring a water well at up to 60 feet for drinking water and a $350 budget with a pressure system. Rotary Club and Y's Men plan to build cabins, with concrete floor slabs poured and material costs around $425 per cabin. Additional memorial cabin for Ray Whitehead may be added south of the parking area to serve as camp administration.
At the directors meeting Ted Bailey reported the grounds committee will sell a youth center rack for the driveway and parking area at 12 dollars per ton delivered to the site. Wind blown sand may be sourced from Cop pock quarry at 10 cents per ton and transported to the beach by volunteer trucks. The committee is authorized to spend 200 dollars.
Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Corp curtailed auto output amid a supplier walkout and labor trouble. About 45,500 workers across the two firms were idled, including 30,000 at Ford, with Chrysler facing further layoffs as a 14 day Ford Monroe Michigan parts plant strike threatened to widen shortages.
Sen. Robert A. Taft said he and President Eisenhower favor a complete overhaul of the military program. They believe a thorough review could trim the defense bill from about $47 billion to around $37 billion, with possible tax reductions. Taft spoke at a Freedom Forum in Schenectady and noted prior campaign aims for sizable cuts.
The week ending April 18 is designated Rural Mail Box Improvement Week by the United States Post Office Department. O J Brown Washington postmaster urges repair of rural boxes in the area served by Washington carriers. May inspections report to Washington. boxes should be well maintained and clearly named for carrier readability.
Rev and Mrs E A Lacour of Oskaloosa continue evangelistic meetings at Wayland Methodist Church in Wayland Iowa during the Deeper Life Crusade sponsored by Finley Chapel and Wayland Methodist churches. Mrs Lacour is a marimba player and speaker. Evening services start at 8 with a 7 15 pm children's session. Special nights this week cover Women’s clubs, Sunday school, Community club, and Family Night. Rev Lacour is a conference evangelist of the North Iowa conference. Rev Lee Underhill and Rev Paul Textor lead the Wayland Methodist Circuit.
Robert William Wilson paid a $19 fine plus costs after appearing before Justice H. M. Putnam on a charge of being intoxicated on a public highway.
Mrs Nettie Swartzendruber 57 died peacefully Monday at her son in law and daughter’s home north of Wellman after a year of ill health. Funeral will be at West Union Mennonite Church Wednesday at 2 pm with Rev. Paul Guengerich and Rev. Eugene Blosser officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. She was born near Clarion February 17 1895, married Erlis Swartzendruber February 13 1916. Survivors include son Loren Lone Tree daughter in Wellman five grandchildren and three siblings all of Weliman.
The House Republican leaders rejected Rep. Daniel A. Reed’s bid to force a floor vote on his 10 percent income tax cut. GOP floor leader Charles A. Halleck said Reed likely cannot muster 218 signatures. A secret Policy Committee meeting was set to tell members to avoid signing the petition as Eisenhower conditions a balanced budget before tax relief.
Robert C. Kelley, son of Mr and Mrs Carl E Kelley of 920 N 5th Ave Washington, reenlisted in the United States Air Force and is now at Offutt Air Force Base Omaha Nebraska according to USA USAF Recruiter John V Houser. Kelley and his wife Mary Ann resided in Davenport where he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and he previously served four years in the U S Army, discharged in April 1952.
Iowa Commerce Commission will hold a public hearing June 4 on Arrow Coach Lines request to extend service from the junction of U S 34 and Iowa 16 to Iowa City via U S 84 and Iowa 1. The Ottumwa company seeks to serve intermediate points including off-route Richland and to handle limited freight. No local service would run between the U S 34 and Iowa 16 junction and the U S 34 and Iowa 1 junction in Wapello Jefferson Keokuk Washington and Johnson counties.
Keith Romine of Wellman was sentenced to 10 days in the county jail on charges of reckless driving. The court case records note a 1 percent assessment alongside the sentence.
Geneva Palmer Dea was bound over to the grand jury under a $350 bond Monday by Justice of the Peace H. M. Putnam on an OMVI charge.
Hartford based report says interior lights should be on along with parking and tail lights when a car stalls at night. Tests indicate interior lights silhouette the vehicle better for approaching drivers than exterior lights, a tip from state motor vehicle officials.
A. E. Baldrige of Washington is named to the Hawkeye Area Boy Scout council nominating committee. The appointment by Dean Al in WW. Dakin comes as the council marks its first year post merger of Waubeek and Iowa River Valley councils. The committee will report at the May 4 annual meeting in Amana, the first since the merger.
Mrs Erma Zelinsky observes five years since purchasing Zelinsky Hardware in 1948 with a anniversary sale. She manages the store in Berwyn Illinois after her husband Walters death and is aided by Geraldine Weeks and others as local notice details appear in the Evening Journal.
Edward Willard left his entire estate to his Fairfield Iowa sister Mrs Elizabeth Willard Hope The Probate Court revised the value from 250000 to 410000 after a stock and bond check The only debt was funeral costs and attorneys fees Hope said her brother never hinted at wealth and preferred a modest room and bus rides to visit.
The Agriculture Department proposed selling 50 million pounds of surplus butter to the armed forces at a price competitive with margarine. E M Norton told a House subcommittee the offer was sent to the Pentagon but received no reply. The department pays about 65 cents a pound wholesale and has bought over 143 million pounds. the Army has bought margarine for under 20 cents a pound, narrowing the price gap.
Edward D. Rayburn 79 longtime Washington real estate dealer and former state representative died at his home. Born 1874 in Montezuma he earlier headed First National Bank there and served as Justice of the Peace. Funeral Thursday at 3 p.m. in Montezuma Steffy funeral home with Masonic rites. survived by son Powell and wife.
Members of the Rural Young Peoples organization of Washington county will attend a meeting in Iowa City tonight to finalize plans for the annual summer camp. The district camp session will be at Camp Abe Lincoln near Davenport in late May. Eloise Brown, county home economist, will accompany the group. A committee including Shirley Brown Anne Dixon Gerald Howell and Charles Twinam was named to plan a weekend trip to Springfield Illinois. The group met at the Farm Bureau building Monday night with Bill Brown of J C Penney speaking on consumer education.
Washington high school students joined the Washington Rotary Club for a noon lesson on parliamentary procedure led by Verne Knecht. Dick Wiley chaired, with motions by John Dawson David Meyers Jim Peiffer and George Janecek. They passed a cleanup campaign plan and Rotary committees will develop it. Roger Kleese spoke on Commercial Fertilizer for the school FFA, and members signed up 435 dollars to build a cabin at Lake Darling youth center with volunteers sought to help Friday.
Allied air units sought to shield a 200 mile thunder road convoy from Chonma to Panmunjom with UN planes scouting above. Cloud cover blocked sight of the column while Navy jets hit targets near Soncon and destroyed 135 Red trucks along the front. General Weyland halted air strikes and ordered vigilance for stray Allied or Communist aircraft. The convoy of 68 Communist vehicles started at 6 a.m. on a two day journey.
Alfred Padgett 70 was shot to death during a scuffle at the Union Tavern in Des Moines. Eldridge Morgan said he fired in self defense after Padgett drew a knife and threatened to cut him. Coroner ruled justifiable homicide. no charges filed.
Gene Gorham was named chairman of the Washington Rec reational council at a Monday meeting. Officers include Mrs. Robert Day as vice chairman Mrs. Golia Miller as secretary and Dr. M. L. Smith as treasurer. The council discussed tennis and authorized lighting work at Lincoln school court. A tennis clinic at the YMCA drew 42 attendees. more sessions are planned at the YMCA gym on upcoming Saturdays.
Washington Boy Scouts of the Methodist church were guests of the Home Builders class for a potluck supper and charter review Monday evening. Paul Shearer delivered the charter, Myron Salladas introduced the troop, and Dr. Robert Eastland awarded the Star Scout to Bill McCleery. Walter Messer presented slides of a Quebec trip to end the program.
A Miami Air Lines military charter plane carrying 22 military passengers and three crew members disappeared in the Cascade Mountains east of Seattle. FAA and Coast Guard search teams, including 13 planes, scoured Stampede Pass area as pilots reported engine loss and increasing altitude drop.
Creston Iowa reports a fire seven miles east of town destroyed the five room frame home of George Kromminga. About 100 residents from nearby Afton formed a bucket brigade but the coal stove blaze consumed the building. Furnishings and clothing were saved. Mrs. Kromminga and two young children escaped unharmed with an estimated loss around $6,000.
A freak April snowstorm cripples New England with up to six inches of snow and sleet across the region. Massachusetts reports a 10 mile traffic jam on Route 30 where motorists, including many families, are stranded for hours. Two deaths are attributed to the storm as plows fail to cope and power lines fall. Connecticut records nine inches of snow in one section amid widespread disruption.
