George Wilson, 70, is in serious condition after a fall into a cistern while repairing a pipe. His wife Mrs. Wilson witnessed the fall, summoned aid, and then entered the cistern to keep his head above water until neighbors arrived.
Homer L. Mc Carty aged 49 of Oelwein is jailed on $3000 bond after federal grand jury indictment in Cedar Rapids on embezzlement of funds from the Oelwein Federal Savings and Loan where he served as secretary treasurer and manager. An audit reported shortages near $3000.
Emery Baird, a farmer near Keosauqua, thanks his dog for waking his family during a fire risk when exhaust fumes looped back into the house. The dog barked, waking Mrs. Baird who collapsed, and Baird and his daughter were weakened. A neighbor was summoned for help.
Mrs Susan Cody widow of a Missouri Valley banker celebrated her 74th birthday with normal vision after 26 years of blindness due to a growth. Doctors recently removed the growth in a delicate operation restoring her sight and allowing reunion with her seven children, last seen in 1915.
The body of a young man in shorts was found after a car plunged from a highway guard rail into the Cedar river between Muscatine and Conesville. The submerged vehicle was discovered with only one wheel above water.
Deettee Smith ten months old was treated after a safety pin lodged in her throat. An X ray revealed a Fox Terrier had a tooth attached to the pin. The surgeon removed the obstruction and the child was returned home.
Blairs town area fire destroys family home. Mrs. Ernest Schwabe, a young farm wife, rescues her two children Donald age one and Rowena age three from smoke filled rooms. The infant is nearly unconscious but only slightly burned. Rowena suffers a cut on her left arm.
Iowa farm families pared expenses in 1938 across autos clothing education furniture and equipment according to a study of 185 home accounts by Miss Dorothy Simmons extension home management specialist at Iowa State College. The average automobile expense drop was 150 for 24 families with four consecutive years of records. Clothing expenditures fell by 40 to 50 per family.
Leslie M. Cart, federal statistician, reported 18 percent more cattle were on feed in Iowa on April 1 than a year earlier. He noted the current total is near the pre-1934 average. In the corn belt overall, cattle on feed rose 13 percent from last year on April 1.
The Washington Credit Bureau states it is updating its complete annual files to provide accurate paying histories of all customers. Merchants support uniform credit policies, favoring prompt or cash payments and sharing records among members of state and national associations to improve service and stock levels.
Des Moines April 14 Governor Wilson said he has not yet received the senate investigation committee report on state institutions nor the ouster resolution against three members of the state board of control. He stated he will comment once he receives the documents.
NVA group meets Ives McKay director of the NYA and announces a 7:30 PM gathering for NYA boys and girls at the American Legion hall. Dr. D C Barrett from the health unit will be the evening speaker.
William Dennis Stafford aged 67 died suddenly at his home four miles east of Waterloo. Born April 29 1872 in Havre he married Eliza Tucker in 1897. Survived by wife son Aaron daughter Velma six grandchildren and several half siblings. Funeral at Sherman’s Funeral Home with home service beforehand.
Repairs on the bridge across Crooked Creek on Coppock road south of Washington proceed with new joints and floor planks. lumber bought with road improvement contracts. Planks are 3 inches thick, 12 inches wide, 16 feet long. Work began yesterday and should finish by Saturday if weather allows. bridge closed to traffic in the interim.
Credar Falls Iowa report says Gordon Dunford a 47 year old blind janitor at the Black Hawk county relief office pleaded guilty to larceny for stealing surplus commodities and giving them to relief clients. He has two per cent vision and receives a blind pension with relief orders for his wife and two children.
Mr. and Mrs. A Palmer were business callers yesterday in Iowa City visiting local firms and discussing potential trade.
London reports a possible limited military understanding between Britain and the Soviet Union. The British ambassador to Moscow was sent to meet Foreign Minister Maxim Litvinov. Britain also signals to Italy it may denounce the 1938 treaty if Italian troops stay in Spain past May. A potential air pact with the Soviet is discussed.
James Slattery, chairman of the Illinois commerce commission and a Democrat allied with Roosevelt policies, was named by Governor Henry Horner to succeed the late Senator J Ham Lewis as United States senator.
Co. L McKinnon of New London a state highway commissioner visited the county board of supervisors to discuss farm to market road work. He said state funds may be used this year to grade and bridge five miles west from Brighton to the Keokuk county line. He noted many projects were dropped due to fund diversions and the allotments will not fund much new county road building.
Brighton reports Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stacy in Iowa City to visit Stacy’s mother recovering from cataract surgery. Guests at the W. F. Lemon home include James Long and family from Winfield and Kenneth Lemon home from college. Marguerite Kessel’s prenuptial shower includes Mary Maxine Tracy attending and staying for the wedding. Neva Long returns from Vinton weekend. Verne Madden hosts a galloping tea. Equality club meets with Mrs. Joel Arnold.
Riverside residents Mrs. Anna Walter and Mr and Mrs Karl Walton and son Marvin were entertained at a Kalona dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs L F Pruess in observance of Mrs Pruess birthday. Mrs M J Wilkinson attended the gathering.

The first church in the county to register delegates for the State Sunday school convention here April 26 27 and 28 is Hich er Mennonite. They have registered a delegation of Sunday school workers with Mrs. Vernon Witting. It is expected that Washington county will have 400 people attending the meeting. Advance registration secures a Special rate of six delegates from any one church for 5 dollars. A small percent of the money from pre convention registrations will be turned over to the local committees to help defray their expenses. It is understood that a number of churches and Sunday schools are paying the registration fee for their delegates, others are paying half. Visitors from multiple towns gathered at various homes on Easter Sunday. Mrs. Mike Ryan and infant visited in Iowa City alongside relatives including Viola Eagle formerly of Kalona now in Salon. Lone Tree casal Harold Waldschmidt and his wife visited Lewis Waldschmidt’s family. Tiffin guests Firmin Deatsch and children visited Elizabeth Kiefer’s home and George Deutsch’s family. Corrine Bowe and Edward Mannion with Rose Mannion joined Hazel Blythe’s guests from Trews City. Krotz family, Zillmer household near Wellman, and Gus Hahn with Charlies Cation family welcomed Easter visitors from Iowa City and surroundings.
Frank Neiswanger brother of Fred and A B Neiswanger of this city died yesterday at his Cambridge Nebraska home after more than two years of ill health. A longtime monument dealer, he lived in Nebraska since 1879 and helped push the Lincoln Highway through the state. He leaves a wife and one daughter.
Mrs Hagist of Keota dies at University Hospital Iowa City at 5 15 pm after illness from flu complicated by pneumonia and heart disease. Funeral arrangements are with Marsh funeral home. service time not announced. Judges at the district music contest in Mount Pleasant rated Washington high school's mixed chorus in division two. Fairfield and Fort Madison choruses were rated in division one, Keokuk received a two. Lois Humble, Washington soprano soloist, placed in division two. Davenport and Keokuk soloists received a rating of one.
Governor Wilson signed the farm to market road bill authorizing a $2,500,000 diversion from the primary road fund to secondary roads through May 15, 1940. After that year, all primary road funds above $16,000,000 annually will be diverted to the secondary system.
Light rain fell last night and into the forenoon totaling 0.29 inches. By noon the sky showed signs of clearing with yesterday's high at 63 and the low last night at 41 degrees.

President Roosevelt told the Pan American Union that the United States will provide economic support and match force if needed to defend western hemisphere democracies.
