Consul General Lee Testifies on Cuba and the Maine

In Washington on April 13 Consul General Lee testified before the senate committee on foreign relations for about an hour. He asserted Spanish agencies caused the Maine explosion and that while some Cuban officials may have known of the plans, he did not implicate General Blanco. He denied knowledge of any diver’s mine at Havana harbor. A crowd greeted Lee in Philadelphia and Washington with cheers and bouquets as he arrived from Havana.

General Receives Hero’s Welcome at White House

The general arrived at the state department building to cheers from clerks and officials, then proceeded to the White House where crowds lined the corridors. He received multiple ovations as he moved between rooms and met supporters.
