Fred Fairchild a 53 year old postal clerk in Mount Pleasant Iowa killed himself with a .45 revolver in the postoffice basement. He had been absent much of the last five months due to ill health. His wife survives.
Ottumwa firemen asked the city council for a ten dollar monthly salary increase but were turned down. Commissioner Harry Swenson and Mayor C A Hill urged patience and promised to consider the request once the city resumes financial stability.
In RED OAK Montgomery County's only baby incubator was used for the first time at Murphy Memorial Hospital. Premature twins James and Janice O'Lenius of Villisca, each about four pounds, were born and fed with a medicine dropper. The Altrusa club donated the incubator in January.
The University of Iowa music department will announce dates for Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni. The University Symphonic Choir directed by Prof. Herald J. Stark will stage the opera soon after spring recess with elaborate costumes and settings.
S G Tokheim of Story City hauling 24000 eggs in a truck crashed into a hay truck driven by Hol Ber Jensen of Ames on the Skunk River bridge approach. The collision sent Tokheim’s truck into the bridge abutment and railing before overturning in the highway.
Lee Coleman and his wife charged with second degree murder in the death of night constable Bert Conrey were released on bonds of 7500 dollars each. They had been jailed since April 2. FE. B. Rinehart and Charlies Riggen signed the bonds. A preliminary hearing was set for Saturday with a trial tentatively scheduled for May.
Iowa State College received an oil painting by S D P Phillips and a watercolor by Lowell Houser from Ames. Anson Marston and Dr Charlies Finley announced the gifts. Houser’s watercolor won the 937 Town Art Salon sweepstakes. both works were chosen by the engineers’ art appreciation class.
Cedar Falls report notes David Swan son Cedar Falls is the only male economics student at Town Teachers College. He stirs and measures ingredients with aptness rivaling the coeds. He joined to learn cooking and cites practical relevance and future needs. Swanson also shows athletic interest.
Lawrence William Klein of Mason City has been chosen as honor man of his company at the Great Lakes US Naval training station. The 92-member company includes Klein who enlisted in Des Moines on January 19.
Sixteen WPA workers will overhaul Ogden's water system with a maximum cost of $191, and 1,756 feet of 4 inch pipe will be laid as part of the project.
About 50 high school students blocked entry and refused to admit teachers in Center Point, 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids, to protest the board of education's decision on re hiring principal A M Pierce and coach. Some students spent last night in the building. others joined at the morning bell as the board warned teachers to stay home. The board remains undecided on reinstating Pierce or settling the dispute.
The north central section conference of the Athletic Federation of College Women will meet at Iowa State College April 21 25 with delegates from 56 colleges across seven states including Iowa Nebraska South Dakota North Dakota Minnesota Wisconsin and Illinois. Dorothy Reynolds of Ames serves as convention chairman guiding nine committees shaping the program.
The regional FFA public speaking contest will be held at Iowa State College on August 8. The winner advances to the national contest in October in Kansas City Missouri. States represented include North Dakota South Dakota Nebraska Kansas Minnesota Iowa Missouri Wisconsin Illinois Indiana Michigan and Kentucky.

The Heights school building will be open for inspection on Thursday and Friday this week from 9 to 11 in the morning and 2 to 4 in the afternoon. The public is invited to call and inspect the building with escorts available to guide visitors.
Earl Kindig of Washington a forestry senior at Iowa State College has been elected orchestra booking agent by Cardinal Guild the student government. He will work with retiring agent Fred Glassburner of Council Bluffs this spring and assume office in September to manage bookings for all college dances.

Wes Custer and Dick Brock dispute a horse for pony trade after Dick takes back the horse claiming it was on trial. Deputies advise court handling while Custer seeks a writ of replevin in a justice court to recover the pony. No one claims the horse as yet. both insist the pony is theirs.
Distillers report national liquor consumption lagging year ago yet Iowa shows an 11 percent rise in January to March 1988 versus 1937. Total seasonal sales hit 2 510 750 55 dollars, with 32 new small stores boosting activity.
President Roosevelt will address the nation in another fireside talk Thursday night. The National Broadcasting Company and the Columbia system plan a nationwide hookup for the 10:36 to 11:15 p.m. Eastern broadcast on relief and other important questions.
Vienna reports former Austrian secretary of state for defense General Wilhelm Zehner aged 55 died by his own hand today. Zehner, a World War II veteran and prominent military figure, had recently been identified as a state official and public figure.
The trial of W. A. Anderson former head of City National Bank at Clinton opened in federal court in Davenport. The government charges misapplication of 20,300 dollars in bank funds.
Boone reports the annual county musical festival will be held April 23 drawing about 850 young musicians from rural town and consolidated schools. The program includes a large rural choir in three sections a massed band a glee club and a mixed chorus.
Oscar Carlson died at 4 50 yesterday afternoon at his home 1103 Fast Harrison street after a year of illness beginning with a stroke and a pneumonia complication. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at two at L A Jones funeral home Swedesburg Lutheran church pastor Rev Paul Westenberg with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born in Sweden April 8 1861 came to the United States in 1883 lived near Kirkwood Illinois then Washington county Iowa before moving to town in 1936. Survived by widow Hulda and two children Ernest Carlson and Mrs Walter Anderson. brothers Pred and Russell are deceased. he was a member of the Swedesburg Swedish Lutheran church.
Dr J B Pollock of West Chester was elected moderator at the Keokuk presbytery spring meeting at Ainsworth. Rev Robert A Foster of Keokuk acted as moderator and Rev C S Ramsdale of Columbus City was re elected stated clerk. The meeting included representatives from nearly all churches in the presbytery and annual reports were heard. The Women’s Missionary Society met with a joint session featuring Rev BE EB Grice addressing furloughed missionary work in Egypt.
Mrs Frank Romine of Wellman died at her home yesterday evening after a prolonged illness. The funeral will be at 9 30 AM tomorrow at the Catholic church in Keota with interment in Keota cemetery. Born July 1881 in Washington county she lived mostly in the county. Survived by husband Frank two sons Francis John Lawrence James Mary and Hubert six grandchildren and several siblings.

Des Moines reports Tunis Vanderpluijm of Cres ton S84 won clemency. With three weeks left of a six month term, Governor Kraschel suspended the remainder of his sentence after a belated grant of clemency was announced.
