Des Moines reports the Governors Refugee Committee seeks Iowa sponsors to bring 100 Dutch families totaling about 500 people this year. Dutch officials aim to relocate 60,000 residents annually for the next five years to ease overpopulation. Committee chairman Richard Everds met Dutch officials in the Netherlands last month to advance the plan.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Legislative Research Bureau was asked to prepare 11 surveys to inform potential new laws. The topics include redistricting reform school district reorganization utility regulation insurance recodification state college financing airline taxation truck taxation school board election procedures non-resident motorist statute salaries for court reporters and alcoholism study.

A fire at the Superior Rug and Cleaning Co in Rock Island caused $6,500 damage and left three firemen overcome by smoke while another was slightly injured. The blaze reportedly began from an unknown source in a bale of cotton on the rear of the first floor. Firemen Louis Polito treated for a wrenched back. Joe Van Hoe W. G. Knoeffel and Floyd J Wilson treated for smoke inhalation.
Chicago police seek a cross country truck driver for questioning in the death of Carla Fisher 16 whose nude body was found in a downtown hotel room. The deceased from Lansing Wisconsin registered the room under John Miller and coroner says natural causes. Detectives pursue the truck driver who once lived on Port Washington street and has since moved to Milwaukee as authorities help Wisconsin locate him.
Violent winds and rain lashed Florida on Tuesday night with reports of tornado velocity winds injuring at least 15 people. Hundreds of trailers toppled and roofs were blown off in Hollywood and Dania areas while a Miami weather bureau crew questioned tornado activity. Downdrafts from thunder squalls dumped up to 3 inches of rain. Far West saw snow and dust storms with five inches of snow in Lakeview Oregon and sand storms in California and western Arizona.
Bettendorf Iowa police say Frank A Bruggenwirth Jr 24 of rural Clinton was killed after fleeing from an officer who found him in an alley behind a car sales office. A chase ended with a fatal shot. Bruggenwirth had prior convictions including a 1953 lascivious acts with a minor charge.
Officials of the Washington Industrial Corporation and the Industrial Committee of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announce a whirlwind campaign to raise 100000 to buy the McCleery Cumming Calendar building and to finance a new plant. Solicitors meet tonight for final briefing before work begins. The 75000 purchase price must be in by April 24 to proceed, or the deal could fail.
Henry Gee a 32 year old bridge designer for the Iowa Highway Commission will not be deported to Red China. President Eisenhower signed a special law allowing him to stay in the United States. Gee entered in 1949 under a Fulbright scholarship and holds a master’s in structural engineering from Iowa State College. He and his wife Mary, expecting their first child, plan to apply for a legal entry visa. He previously faced deportation after refugee act rejection but local officials and lawmakers helped secure his stay. After five years of permanent residence he can apply for citizenship.
Iowa sees over 1,500 new jobs from plant openings and expansions since January 1. Twenty eight major moves include 15 new or expanded units by 13 Iowa manufacturers, adding about 5.29 million dollars in annual payroll and 145,740 dollars in local taxes on 4.858 million valued property. Cities gaining new plants include Albia Boone Burlington Cedar Rapids Council Bluffs Elliott Fairfield Laurens LeMars Maquoketa Montezuma Postville Sigourney and Vetter. Expansions announced in Center ville Cherokee Clinton Davenport Eddyville Estherville Fairfield.
YMCA Y's Men vote to purchase 100 folding chairs for summer use at Lake Darling Youth Center and winter use at the Washington YMCA. They plan a Lake Youth Center clean up and discuss the YMCA house move in May. Also covered district convention plans for April 15 with Dick Pratt as general chairman.
U N secretary general Dag Hammarskjold met Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser in Cairo for 75 minutes to urge peace in the Holy Land amid new Israeli charges of terror. Nasser proposed a military vacuum by pulling back troops, while Israel demanded an end to terror activities by commandos inside Israel.

Survived by daughter Ruth Duncan Park Ridge Illinois son Richard A Stewart and grandchildren Patricia Lynda William Allen Stewart.
Nat King Cole cancelled three southern appearances and flew to Chicago for rest after three white segregationists attacked him during a Birmingham show. The singer resumed performing after a doctor treated a slight back injury. remaining engagements include Norfolk on Saturday.
Funeral services for Jess Cutkomp 63 will be at Louisa Center Community Church at 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. William H. Moon presiding. The body lies at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Columbus City cemetery. One son Robert of Hills is among survivors.
Sen Henry M Jackson warned that even with a planned B52 production increase the United States will not match the Soviet Union in intercontinental jet bomber output. He said more steps will follow once a special Armed Services subcommittee led by Sen Symington reviews U S air power and opens hearings next week with intercontinental bomber production as the first focus.
Clarence Gail Whitlock, 30, of Portland Oregon, confessed to cashing at least 2500 in fraudulent checks across 17 states. He admitted stealing checks from Tacoma Rubber Stamp Co in Tacoma and Columbia Street Service in Olympia and cashing other fraudulent personal checks.
