Iowa Fires Set All Time Loss Record in 1961
Iowa fire losses reached a record 12.81 million in 1961 with 82 deaths, the third highest in a decade. Most fatalities were among the young and elderly, 39 in city homes and 15 in farm homes, while the Luther College gym blaze caused 850000 in damage.

Warmer Temperatures Promised for Iowa
Strong northwesterly winds kept Iowa cold today but warmer air is on the way. Lows tonight fall to the low 20s to mid 30s north to south with highs in the 50s Tuesday as southerly winds bring rain showers and cloudy skies across the state. Rain continues into Wednesday with cooler readings in the west. Early today clearing skies left much of Iowa below freezing with lows from 24 at Spencer to 33 at Davenport.

Missouri Youths Held in Macon Burglary Case
Four Northeast Missouri State College students ages 18 to 19 were held in custody in Macon County on burglary and attempted burglary charges. Robert Dunkel Edward Ireland Bennett Dupree and Bernard Singleton were arrested after Dunkel was caught trying to break into Boozan's Liquor Store. The group admitted breaking into an Atlanta pool hall and recovering seven dollars.Charges were to be filed as county prosecutors returned.
