Capacity Crowd Enjoys Gidget at Washington High

A near full Washington High School auditorium witnessed a junior class presentation of Gidget. Verwoerd Shot During Speech in Johannesburg

South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd was wounded after a white assailant fired at him at the Rand Industrial Exhibition in Johannesburg. Verwoerd’s wife was unharmed, and the attacker was identified as farmer David Pratt from Transvaal. Verwoerd underwent emergency surgery at Johannesburg General Hospital as authorities reported a tense security climate amid ongoing apartheid protests.

Bennett Youth Named Star Iowa Farmer of 1960

Evans H. Wilter of Bennett has run his family’s 240 acre Iowa farm since high school. He oversees 350 hogs 58 sheep 530 stock cows 210 acres of crops plus 60 acres of pasture and 100 acres of corn oats and hay. He earned a 200 cash award from the National FFA Foundation after selection from 197 candidates for outstanding supervised farming and school program activities.

Suspect Cleared In Triple Slaying In Arizona

In SHOW LOW Arizona a 21 year old man was cleared of suspicion in the murder of three Illinois women at Starved Rock State Park. Sheriff Butsey of La Salle County said the man is not the killer though he gave no motive or details of the questioning. The victims were Frances Murphy Mildred Lindquist and Lillian Oetting.

Bradley President Slain in Hotel Room Mystery

Richard Vanover 21, a former circus worker, faces first degree murder charges for strangling Da vid B. Owen 51 former Bradley University president and Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce head. Owen was found nude and beaten in a downtown Alton Hotel room after a struggle heard by a clerk. Police say Vanover admitted beating and robbing Owen. Vanover appeared unconcerned in court as his wife Darline was held as a witness. Owen led Bradley University from 1946 to 1952 before resigning amid a basketball scandal.

Quiet Brink's Driver Steals 30000 Then Drifts to Bar

William Johnson a 57 year old Brink's driver with 27 years of clean service took 30000 from his armoured truck after leaving his keys and badge in the cab. He was later found two hours later at a tavern having spent most of the money on drinks. Johnson said he was fed up and did not need the money, a move Brink's called a tragedy.

Senate approves civil rights measure aimed at Negro voting rights

The Senate passed a civil rights bill 71 to 18 to guarantee Negro voting rights in the South. The House plans to send the bill to the White House for signature after Easter. The legislation authorizes federal referees to register voters where discrimination exists and tightens penalties for opponents of school integration.

Bellevue Man Killed As Truck Hits Bridge

Vincent Specht aged 41 of Bellevue died Friday when the pickup he rode in struck a bridge railing on U S Route 2 67 about four miles south of Bellevue. Driver Gregry Herrig 41 and another passenger Harold Seiler 42 were hospitalized. Herrig could face charges. Specht was seated between the other two occupants. It was the county's second traffic fatality this year.
