Dr Hiraiwa was elected a bishop at a Tokyo Methodist conference and consecrated. He succeeds Bishop Honda. The national Sunday school convention opened in Tokyo with President Kozak stressing greater opportunities and responsibility from official Christian recognition.
Des Moines, April 9. Wylie Pratt was shot and killed by his former wife in his North Des Moines residence. The woman surrendered to police claiming self defense.
The trout season opens in Wisconsin next Monday. Severe winter conditions raise fears of a small fish supply in streams across the state.
Avesnes France April 9 seven women and children were killed as they rushed for the doors during a hall fire. Fifteen more women and children were injured in the panic at the concert hall.
New York April 9 Wall street shuddered at Frank Law the parachute jumper as he descended from the Bankers Trust building to the subtreasury roof a 500 foot drop his chute opened late narrowly missing disaster the huge umbrella clipped the flagpole but he recovered and landed waving to spectators.
Washington April 9. The Supreme Court denied the government’s petition to intervene in the Dick monograph patent case and denied rehearing. The Pomona California case upholds local regulation of Sunset Telephone poles and lines. It affirmed payment of 136000 by a French company over a gas check patent. Krupp Steel Co. v General Crozier remanded for adjudication. Intermountain cases on interstate commerce act reassigned for full bench October 15 with related road and bath tub trust cases postponed.
London reports a broad revival of industry as thousands of miners return to coal pits and factories begin reopening after fuel shortages. Full coal supply is seen returning in weeks, with two months to build normal reserve stocks.
A fire aboard the Ontario, running between Baltimore and Boston, forced 30 passengers to abandon ship as it ran aground near Montauk Point. Life Savers and crews from nearby stations aided, transferring passengers to a tug while the crew stayed aboard to fight the blaze. The vessel, 1987 tons net and 290 feet long, was built in 1904 and left Baltimore Saturday.
In El Paso Texas on April 9 a car racing through mud and rain outran a war supplies train destined for Mexican insurgents. The auto seized 35 000 rounds of ammunition intended for Guadalupe Mexico opposite Tornillo. Secret service riders chased the train 32 miles to Fathers station and seized the munitions after unloading.
James H. Smith alias John Kabusta received a 30 year sentence in the penitentiary for assaulting and robbing Morris Bennett a grocer of Pairmont Heights Md on November 20. Chicago detectives had identified him as the man wanted for two murders including a baseball bat killing. Smith struck with a hatchet during the attack.
Nashville April 9 Governor Hooper announces the appointment of Newell Sanders of Chattanooga as United States senator to succeed the late Senator Robert L. Taylor. Sanders is state chairman of the Republican central committee and a prominent Chattanooga manufacturer.
Lloyd C Griscom is steadily improving in a Philadelphia hospital after an operation last week. He is expected to leave the hospital within two weeks.
George and Frank Drew were carried ashore on an ice raft at Chambers Island after 32 hours adrift. A large rescue effort failed to locate them until a drifting white field of ice broke toward the island, allowing the brothers to reach the shore exhausted but alive.
J P Morgan, in Florence, told reporters he will not discuss Morse or his business. He was asked to explain the alleged flight of Charles W Morse from Florence and replied with controlled anger.

Des Moines Capital publisher Lafayette Young announces candidacy to succeed Senator W. S. Kenyon. Colonel Young previously filled Dolliver’s seat by gubernatorial appointment and served in the Senate until Kenyon’s election by the Iowa legislature in February last year.
A rigger named William Budge and an unidentified laborer died when seven stones weighing 1,000 pounds each fell from a third floor on upper Fifth Avenue. A derrick on the fourth floor, shifted by the stones, collapsed into the street, injuring several people.
In Shensi province riots targeting foreigners break out with many Mohammedans killed. Dispatch from Tientsin reports the violence spreading amid anti foreign sentiment.
Lincoln Nebraska April 9 Stevens three year old daughter of Joseph Kopp died while at play when a gust of wind blew a pane of glass from a grocery window in front of which she stood.
Cleveland April 9 The lake shipping season is open with Standard Oil barge No 6 arriving from Lorain in tow of tug Pearce as the first vessel to enter the port. Two ferry barges between Conneaut and the Canadian shore also passed the city.
Topeka Kansas April 9 Governor Stubbs proclaims April 17 as statewide clean up day to reduce fire losses estimated at 3,000,000 dollars.
Langford defeated Sam McVea on points in a 20 round bout at MclIntosh's stadium before 25 000 spectators in Sydney Nova Scotia. Referee Snowy Baker praised Langford as victor after an hour of brisk rounds. Heavyweights Jim Barry and Porky Flynn watched ringside with Johnny Thompson and Jimmy Clabby among the spectators.
William Lanier Washington, great grand nephew of George Washington, files a suit in the supreme court against Atwood Violett, head of Atwood Violett & Co. He seeks 200000 dollars in damages alleging Violett made twelve slanderous statements questioning his commercial honesty.
