Shepard Co has discharged men and filled with women, and some workers resisted entry at W B Conkey Co. union members press for terms.
Gaudaur champion oarsman and Robert Johnson of Vancouver arrange a world class match race for the championship with a $2000 side bet. The race is set for this summer at Burrard inlet in Vancouver.
In Indiana April 9 two women and a man accused of chicken theft were subjected to a public bath by Judge Lynch and his twenty associates. The trio, traveling in a wagon near Marietta, were stripped and forced to wash each other before being sent away toward the setting sun.
The steamer Alki arrived with news of a landslide on the Chilkoot trail reporting thirty-one known dead and many injured. The wreck involved a freight train on the Montana Central and a car of cyanmite exploded, blowing three men to eternity. Prairie Pires in South Dalkote reportedly destroyed property and lives. A westbound Montana Central freight of sixteen cars including a dynamite car wrecked near the Dry Forks bridge sixty miles from Great Falls. Fire killed three men L. Openhelm Charlies W Cockrell and A. J. Martin as the dynamite car exploded and the bridge collapsed. Cause under investigation with telegraph cut.
Destructive prairie fires swept southwestern Beadle and eastern Hand counties on Thursday causing $10,000 to $15,000 in damages. Many farms lost homes buildings machinery and stock while the De Mott family narrowly escaped at the Barden farm near Wessington as rain arrived at sunset. Nearby Gallipolis Ohio saw a towboat Stella explode while towing ties on the Kanawha leaving captain and pilot seriously hurt and the crew forced to swim to shore.
