Dallas residents light matches to set off an electric eye on a hotplate that ignites and burns the church mortgage. The unusual act involves every congregation member lighting a match to burn the mortgage document.
At least six people died in Iowa traffic crashes over the weekend with one Iowa victim dying in Wisconsin. Victims include Virgil Lang 23 of Sioux City and Emil Rosenau 48 of Mason City.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Wirene, their daughters Mary and Judy, and Mary Lowe of Crawfordsville were in a five o clock Sunday crash near Hedrick when a car from a side road struck their vehicle. They were taken to Ottumwa Hospital for treatment. Mrs Wirene sustained head cuts and serious injuries, Mr Wirene multiple broken ribs, Judy leg injuries, Mary Lowe facial and head injuries, while Mary Wirene escaped with minor injuries. Mrs Wirene teaches at Haskins School.
Marilyn J. Quinn, girls physical education instructor at Lincoln and Stewart schools, submitted her resignation to Superintendent M. M. Schell. She will finish her degree next summer and plans to seek work at the high school level.
Edmund D. Morrison of Grinnell College served as one of 15 delegates at the Midwest College Young Republicans convention in Madison, Wisconsin, April 4 5. The Grinnell junior and 1954 Washington High School graduate is treasurer of the local Young Republicans and active with the college newspaper staff and YMCA.
A Mississippi rural area near Tupelo was hit by a tornado four miles long and a half mile wide, destroying a home a barn and a machine shop with no injuries reported as residents hid in cellars. A broad winter storm dumped heavy snow from Illinois to New York and closed schools in northern Ohio. Toledo had 10 inches, Goshen 8, central Illinois 6, and Erie 3 inches. Colorado faced record cold with Eagle at 7 below zero and Denver 9 above. Governor Loveless commuted Warren Nutter Jr.'s death sentence to life in prison for the slaying of Officer Harold Pearce, citing age and a broken home, while transcripts were reviewed.
WAPELLO Frank Courtney died Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Burlington. Funeral services are set for 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Church Wapello. Born February 21 1873 in Louisa County he married Rose Hutchinson who died March 7 1956. Survivors include daughter Gladys Walter of Grafton Nebraska and son Paul. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Washington friends report the death of Drew Donaldson age 57 at his California home. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Richard Donaldson formerly of Ainsworth with a long family history in Washington and Long Beach. He is survived by his wife a sister Mrs Dorothy Donaldson Bennett and an uncle Dr J E Edgington of Ames. He served in World War I and had recently been treated at a Los Angeles veterans hospital.
Mrs. Charles E. Bonnett 71 died Saturday in Washington County Hospital after a period of ill health. Funeral at Hoskins Funeral Home Brighton Wednesday at 1 p.m. with burial at Greenwood Cemetery following graveside services at 3 p.m. She was born Abby Phoebe McBride January 9 1886 in Muscatine County and married to Charles Bonnett in 1912. Survivors include her husband three daughters one son 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Israeli officials said they would press ahead with a test ship through the Suez Canal despite Cairo warnings that any Israeli vessel would be destroyed. The Abukir, an Egyptian frigate removed from Port Said harbor, was towed north to the Great Bitter Lake as UN salvage work continued. Israel celebrated the Kern Hills tanker’s arrival at Eilat and eyed a pipeline bypass, while fearing pressure from Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Graveside rites for Arthur Sam Kime son of Floyd Kime of Richland will be held at Packwood Cemetery with date pending Navy notification. Kime was missing since February 1942 when his plane disappeared in a heavy snowstorm over the Rockies. Services will be conducted by Lt Commander A J Kalinoski and Lt Commander E F Robb with assistance from the Richland American Legion.
Miss Clare Sommers 72 of Kalona died at 3 a m Sunday at Shenk Nursing Home Wellman after long illness. Peterseim Funeral Home Kalona sets service at 2 p m Tuesday with Rev Dendy Garrett officiating. Burial Sharon Hill Cemetery. Born July 6 1884 near Kalona she was daughter of Christian and Augusta Faulk Sommers and member of Kalona Methodist and Order of Eastern Star. Survived by one brother Peter Prosser of Washington and numerous nieces and nephews.
Howard McAtlin 72 died at 3 10 a m today at his farm home four miles south of Washington after years of illness. Funeral held 2 p m Wednesday April 10 at Jones Funeral Home with Dr Walter Scheuermann presiding. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born December 12 1884 in Washington County and married Viola Hancher in 1908 and Emma Caroline Hutt in 1918. Survivors include his wife a son Donald Washington a brother Marcus McAtlin San Diego a half brother William McAtlin Grand Junction two sisters Mrs Mary Mason Neoga Illinois and Mrs George Timberman Davenport. One son and a sister and a half sister are deceased.
Washington High School seniors announce tickets are on sale for The Man Who Came to Dinner a giddy Broadway comedy. The play debuts Thursday and Friday in the school auditorium with Mark Hensel as Sheridan Whiteside and James Hervey directing final rehearsals.
L. E. Mead 85 of Morning Sun reportedly shot himself with a 22 caliber rifle in his home at 6 30 a m Sunday after returning from a trip to California. Stephen Mead of Des Moines and his wife brought him to Morning Sun to help repair his home. The Mead couple upstairs heard a noise and found him dead. Louisa County Coroner Victor Stacy said no inquest will be held. Funeral arrangements are with Pierce Funeral Home. Survivors include two sons and one daughter. Mrs Mead preceded him in death about a year ago.
Mrs Ben Boone 77 of Kalona died at her home at 2 p m Saturday from a heart attack Funeral services were held at Peterseim Funeral Home Kalona with Rev Hugh Guy in charge Burial was in Sharon Hill Cemetery Sophia Snider born July 28 1879 near Keota daughter of William and Louise Spenner Sni der She married Ben Boone May 4 1898 They ran the Boone Hotel in Kalona later a telephone operator She was a member of the United Christian and Baptist Church at Kalona Survived by three sons Ora Faye of Kalona Dan of Grace Hill a daughter Mrs Charles Pine of Ely Sin Minn eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents and three sons.

Former British prime minister Sir Anthony Eden, 59, arrived in Boston from New Zealand to undergo a series of medical tests for a digestive ailment that ended his political career. He is at New England Baptist Hospital under Dr. Richard B. Cattell after a long flight and prior surgery.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles urged folding foreign military aid into the defense budget and establishing a 750 million dollar revolving fund for foreign economic aid. He backed continuing authorization for defense support and urged a long range development fund potentially totaling 750 million annually. The proposal aims to stabilize and streamline U.S. overseas aid amid congressional concerns.

Sheriff Charles Snyder stated three cases of malicious injury to vehicles occurred in three months. A nearly new car owned by Floyd Martin of Ainsworth was ruined. sugar or sugar solution was added to oil in two cases and to gas in one. Penalties include up to one year in prison, six months in jail, and a $500 fine. All incidents happened in the Ainsworth community.
