Grand Island Nebraska report says Jailer Harry La Borde earned a mail order course certificate in handling prisoners and soon faced a breakout when prisoner Arthur Armstrong of Detroit dug a hole in the wall. La Borde quipped the course did not cover loose brick walls.
Washington city council votes to start legal action to vacate the north south alley behind Stewart Hardware and Tait Radio on North Iowa Avenue. They discuss customer only parking enforcement and odor issues from faulty sewer connections and basins.
The Iowa House rejected a use tax measure 45 to 40, striking the clause to apply the tax to items brought into Iowa from other states. Rep. Tate warned nonresident contractors would face tax on machinery and supplies for out of state projects, while fearing retaliation by other states. The House also approved a $2 million two year appropriation for the legislative interim committee and added an amendment shifting funds toward National Guard armory projects. The Senate must act on the amendment. The Senate also unanimously passed a bill to raise hearse license fees from 15 to 30 dollars a year, now headed to the House.
Eleven members of the Washington Toastmasters club joined a Fairfield gathering to discuss starting a local Toastmasters club. Attendees from Ottumwa and Centerville learned of the group’s goals and the Fairfield club elected temporary officers with a charter planned in the coming weeks. Washington participants included Dr. L. P. Clow, John Ganon, Frank Patterson, Verne Sladek, Frank Miller, Bernard McCarthy, Keith Vetter, Ralph Martin, Bob Lytle, Don Stone, and Bruce Cowden.
Perry R Masterson 38 of Des Moines posted 400 bond this morning on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated by H M Putnam justice of the peace. He was arrested Monday night at the junction of highways 21 and 1 in Kalona. Martin E Tiernan also of Des Moines was fined 10 dollars and costs for being intoxicated on a public highway by Justice Putnam.
West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer declared Germans are loyal and eager partners in the quest for peace and freedom led by the United States. He spoke during his Washington visit arriving at National Airport and meeting President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, and Secretary of State Dulles.
Charles S Crone Jr son of Mr and Mrs Charles S Crone Sr of Washington has enlisted in the United States Air Force per area recruiter John V Houser After processing in Des Moines he was sent to Lackland Air Force Base Texas for nine weeks of basic training.
Mr and Mrs Ray Reynoldson moved from Albion Nebraska to Washington in March and take temporary residence at 1114 East Washington Street. He works as crew manager for Foraney Manufacturing Company in the northeast territory. They have two sons Robert a Albion High School senior and Ronnie a seventh grader. Robert plans summer work in Albion. The family attends the Methodist church and Mrs Reynoldson has Legion Auxiliary ties and works at Rothschilds store.
Preliminary music contest for small vocal and instrumental groups will be held at Wellman on Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11. Washington music students directed by Melvin Hill and Robert Farrell will compete at Wellman. Congress has declared war eleven times.
Four Olds High School boys were injured Monday night in a highway 218 crash half a mile south of Olds. They were taken to Mt. Pleasant hospital with non fatal injuries. Dennis Saltzman suffered head injuries and was listed as most seriously hurt.
Semyon D. Ignatiev was dismissed as secretary of the Central Committee after allowing former state security officials to frame 15 Soviet doctors. Pravda noted his March 21 appointment ended, and Monday’s paper blamed him for political blindness and gullibility in the January arrest.
Mrs Belma Hawkins of Omaha Nebraska and George E Coon of Des Moines Iowa were in a collision one mile east of Washington on highway 92 when Hawkins followed the truck into the Blue Note cafe driveway and struck its rear fender. Damages were about 300 on the car and 100 on the truck.
President Eisenhower warns against withdrawing troops from Korea too quickly as the political debate over defense limits continues. Senator Taft signals support for Leonard W. Hall as GOP national chairman, urging preselection talks with the President and leaders. Hall, ex-congressman and Nassau County surrogate judge, has been the favored candidate since Roberts resigned.
Camp Fire Girls visited the Evening Journal office Monday afternoon to learn how a daily newspaper is published. Des Moines report says a tentative pact on the yellow oleo bill was reached by the legislative conference committee. Details were not released but a quarter pound rectangular package with an identifying mark may be allowed, such as the stamp oleomargarine. Senator Frank C. Byers said the agreement would be written and presented to the full committee for approval.
Louis L. Miller a native of Wellman and former Mennonite minister in Wayland has published The New Minister with Pageant Press New York. The Chicago area based author lectures in Illinois under the Temperance League. he once served in Wayland 1920–22 and also pastored in Wadsworth Ohio and Brewer Maine.
Fred Eugene McManus a young Marine who killed five people in four days was sent to Willard State Hospital Ovid New York for sanity tests. Ontario County District Attorney Thomas Croucher said if he is found insane he will be committed. if sane they will bring him back for trial possibly after September.
Gordon McCreedy’s color motion pictures from his Grand Canyon Colorado River trip will be shown at the Presbyterian church Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Homebuilders class sponsors the event to raise funds for a church nursery, following a recent bake sale that netted about 110 dollars. Admission is 10 cents with refreshments after the movie. The films feature canyon sights seen by few visitors.
The Iowa Health Department and Public Health Service will survey dental health in Washington and other Iowa cities with varying fluoride levels. Dentists will examine white children ages six to fourteen at Stewart School on April 9, using residency continuity and schoolwide questionnaires to compare caries prevalence and fluoride effects. The clinical phase starts January 1953 with findings to follow.
Ainsworth high school music students under Harold Wortman present a pre contest program at the school tonight. Admission is free and the program includes chorus numbers and small groups.

A damage suit for over 195000 filed by the widow of New London doctor Robert Stolley over a 1952 highway crash on Highway 218 south of Riverside was settled out of court. The jury had been seated and the trial begun before Judge R G Yoder when the agreement was reached after a recess following 1:30 pm. The case named Marion Stoley as exexcutrix of Stolley’s estate against Hargrave Construction Company Ray E Adams Towers Trucking Service and L O Piehart. The jury was dismissed after the settlement. Stolley was killed when two trucks collided and one swerved into his oncoming car. his son Peter was injured.
Two AWOL soldiers Jun ior L. Parham 20 Washington state and Mitchell J. Mulligan 20 Pennsylvania were arrested in Olathe Kansas and returned to Adel Iowa. They admit breaking into the Robert Burchett Jewelry store March 30 and stealing $800 of merchandise with some loot found in their car.
Iowa Electric Company and Iowa Electric Light and Power face a voting today on their merger amid a Linn County Court petition for a temporary injunction. Karl Kaufmann of Iowa City sues as a preferred stockholder, arguing the deal hurts preferred stock and favors common stockholders.
