Washington county to launch American Cancer Society drive

The firm began in 193 when Smart & Parish operated with Frank Parish until 1941. Vera Smart, active during wartime, earned recognition from IH publications for her work. Mr. Smart has since modernized the front of the building on East 3rd Street and installed a new parts department with updated counter units.

Sylvester Gilbert Bell 70 longtime steward of the Washington county home and farm died at 2 30 this morning at the county home after a weeklong illness. Born Jan 22 1877 in Iowa county he lived in the area most of his life and was married Aug 8 1899 at Wellman to Laura Whetstine. He previously served as Keokuk county home steward from 1923 to 1938 and later moved to Washington county five years ago with his wife to manage the county home. He belonged to the Christian church and Odd Fellows and is survived by his wife two women raised in his home five grandchildren.

No Sign of Settlement as 325000 Telephoners Walk Out
The 49 member policy committee of the National Federation of Telephone Workers rejected Secretary Schwellenbach's proposal for a temporary truce.
