Soviet border guards closed the 110 mile Berlin Helmstedt highway for four hours and blocked Allied and German civilian traffic. Large Soviet tank formations patrolled the autobahn while Allied sources say the move was to protest West German Parliament meetings in West Berlin. No major incidents reported in the air corridors. a Pan Am pilot observed unknown aircraft nearby.

Over two inches of rain fell in the Washington area over Sunday and Monday. The 2.04 inch total included .82 inch last night, softening thawed rural roads and settling ground. City residents welcome the rain to wash away winter dirt and mud as grass shows signs of summer.

Funeral rites held for D. O. Butler 76 Washington native
Funeral services for D. C. Butler 78 of Washington who died Wednesday March 31 in a nursing home in Indianapolis were held Saturday in Lebanon Indiana. Burial followed in a country cemetery near Old Union where he was born. He was born in 1888 and married Rebecca She beck on December 24 1955 in Washington. Survived by his wife Harold a son and a grandson.

Flooding rivers in northwest Iowa reached record levels, forcing dozens of families from their homes and cutting Sioux Rapids water. Schlapkohl Named Assistant School Superintendent Here
Kelly Schlapkohl named assistant superintendent of schools in the Washington Community district. The board accepted Edward Hutchcroft’s resignation effective July 1 1965 as Hutchcroft leaves to become West Branch district superintendent. Hutchcroft served 13 years in the local system, five as assistant superintendent and curriculum and transportation director. Schlapkohl has been high school principal for four years and previously led Lincoln elementary. A new high school principal will be named at a later board meeting.

Four injured in Wellman two car crash on Highway 22
A two car collision at the Lime Creek bridge on Highway 22 east of Wellman injured four people. John Junior Witmer and his mother Mary Wittmer of Moscow rode west, while William Senger of South English drove east across the center line. All injured were taken to Mercy Hospital. Witmer suffered cuts and bruises but none were hospitalized.
