Lovers receive life terms in Barbara Jean murder case

Dr. R Bernard Finch and Carole Tre goff were sentenced to life imprisonment with possible parole after seven years for the July 18, 1959, killing of Barbara Jean Finch in Los Angeles. The couple vowed to appeal, while tearfully signaling they remain in love.

Johnson demands end to Soviet veto on nuclear treaty

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson told reporters in Geneva that there can be no nuclear test ban treaty unless Moscow drops its demand for veto power. He warned that a treaty without such vetoes would lack credibility and said the United States and Britain have proposed plans to address Soviet concerns.

Cedar Rapids man joins Iowa highway commission

The Iowa Senate confirmed seven governor appointments including Howard B. Helscher of Cedar Rapids to the highway commission. Helscher, 56, a real estate man, replaces Robert Brice and will serve a $5,250 annual term starting July 1. He is a Coe College graduate and Keota native.

Keota Man Hurt in Car Truck Crash

Bernard Sieren a 46 year old Keota resident was injured in a collision with a semi truck at the intersection of highways 92 and 77 near Keota. He was taken to Mercy Hospital Iowa City for observation with a broken arm and possible additional injuries. LeRoy Smith of Gary Indiana driver of the semi was uninjured.

May Order Removal Of Diseased Elm Trees

Iowa Senate clears a Dutch Elm disease bill authorizing city councils to order property owners to remove infected elm trees at their expense with council power to assess costs if not complied. One dissenting vote by Sen. Carl Hoschek. The chamber also approved Davenport two Scott County supervisors by township terms and allowed school districts to adjust common boundaries and gave the regents broader power to invest trust funds.

U S Judge Graven to Retire After 17 Years

UPI reports U S District Judge Henry No Graven of the Northern District of Iowa will retire August 31 after more than 17 years on the federal bench. Graven, 67, has served since March 30, 1944 and says he is in good health and will aid in emergencies with full dockets. He announced his resignation in a letter released by Francis Tierney, U S commissioner and county Democratic chairman.

Western leaders discuss Laos peace prospects at high level talks

Washington officials reported that British and American leaders sought a lasting Laotian settlement as a cease fire nears. Rusk and Home deliberated on Laos disarmament and nuclear test ban while Kennedy and Macmillan planned a Honey Fitz conference. Talks touched Berlin and Germany, NATO unity, and UN Hammarskjold issues.

Erbe Names Five State Appointees In Iowa

Gov. Norman A. Erbe submitted five appointments to the Iowa Senate including Everett Shockey for a highway commission post and Wilbur C. Molison to the board of regents. The slate also adds three soil conservation committee members Donald Johnson Wendell C. Pellett and Fred Cherry with terms set to six years for Pellett and Cherry and four years for Johnson under a new law.

Former Teacher Here Claimed in Indiana

Mrs. Margaret Echlin aged 81, longtime local teacher dating to about 1905, died Tuesday in Newburgh Indiana. A native of Tipton Iowa she was the former Margaret Safley. She married Rev Dr Roy P D Echlin a local minister who later led Buena Vista College and died in 1928. Survivors include daughter Margaret Echlin Boorman of Mill River Massachusetts son James Safley Echlin of Nova Scotia and five grandchildren.

Local Group Tours Ana­masa State Reformatory

Supt John V Phieger and three area high school students joined 22 students and faculty from Oskaloosa and Monroe for a guided tour of the Ana­mosa State Reformatory. Burrell Smith, county probation officer, organized the visit to show how the institution operates.

Iowa Unemployed to Get Added Federal Benefits

Beginning April 10 unemployed Iowa workers who have exhausted regular unemployment insurance can file for additional Federal benefits. Chairman Henry E. Carter said Iowa joins a new program paying temporary extra compensation for those whose benefits ended since June 30, 1960. Eligible workers may receive up to half of their Iowa benefits, with 13 extra weeks possible for some who drew 26 weeks. Prospective claimants must have exhausted all regular benefits and meet Iowa law requirements. Unemployed workers in Federal programs for ex servicemen and federal employees are included.

Y Dance Lessons Begin This Friday At Washington YMCA

Congo Sees Gizenga Oppose Federation in Talks

In Leopoldville, Antoine Gizenga, leader of Oriental Province, remains opposed to a federation of Congo states while agreeing to talks with central government delegates. Premier Cleophas Kamitatu outlined Gizenga’s willingness to meet at Stanleyville or near Oriental territory, naming Boukango and Cyrille Adoula as negotiators.

Jobless Trend Could Rise If Current Rates Persist

Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg warned unemployment could top 8.5 million by next April if rates stay unchanged and new workers or those displaced by automation cannot find jobs. He cited 7.3 million new jobs needed next year to drop unemployment to four percent and noted Kennedy weighs extra economic stimulus.

Centennial Plans at Shorter AME Church Announced

Rev. Fred L. Penny announced plans for the centennial observance at Shorter AME Church on South Avenue C in Washington. Roger Maxwell of Wayland High School will present a musical program at 2 30 p m Saturday and lead singing Sunday at 2 30 p m. Algerian terrorists attacked a hospital in Montfermeil, killing a police sergeant and wounding four patients, a hospital attendant, three visitors, and two other officers. They fled in a car after firing on a Moslem patient and escaping at visiting hour.
