Former President Marty S Truman says he was shortsheeted by his coconut island cabinet on Coconu Island. His host Edwin Pauley's three children and four other youths doubled up the sheets before the group left for the mainland Friday night.
An explosion at a Formosa ammunition facility near Nantsechu demolished a dynamite plant and killed at least 21 workers with about 270 injured. Police said faulty torpedo handling triggered the blast. 12,000 tons of ammunition were hurled skyward. Fire and debris devastated nearby homes as a hillside pit trapped workers.
The Atomic Energy Commission detonated a secret device over the Nevada desert at 7 51 am Pacific time. Two radio controlled jet fighters carrying mice and monkeys flew through the radioactive cloud and returned to Indian Spring Air Force Base guided by mother planes. The blast occurred 5 000 feet above Yuecca Flat proving ground and was only partly seen or felt near Las Vegas. A child was reported hijacked from a parked station wagon on a highway southeast of the area.
More than 200 guards walk out at Iowa Ordnance Plant hurting production. About one third of 1,200 midnight shifts and a third of 4,000 day shifts reported for work. Union leaders say 85 to 94 percent of production workers refused to cross picket lines. Talks with mediation service continue as guards seek time and a half on weekends and a 15 cent raise from 1.65 to 1.80 an hour.

Results of the 1953 American Red Cross Drive in Crawfordsville show the town’s total exceed $222.75. Volunteers include Lois Love Vivian Wells Harold Miller Ethel M Henss and Bob Miller with 15 donors recorded. Solicitors for Crawford Township were Frank Gault Hayden Thomas David Banks Lyle Lowe Joe H Jones Allan Lucas Clarence Fulton George Dare and Kenneth Kilpatrick.
Alice Thomas of 39 South Avenue B reports radishes lettuce and onions up indicating her status as a bona fide member of the early bird gardeners organization.
In Kearney Nebraska a divorced husband, Jack Stanecipher, 31, shot and killed Melvin Schultz, 41, in front of Schultz’s home. Stanecipher, who admitted the slaying, then wrecked a car in an apparent suicide attempt. First degree murder charges pending, with Ruby Stonecipher, Schultz’s companion and the victim’s estranged wife, present.
The report notes 300 minerals exist in North Carolina, with 70 classified as commercially producible. Authorities emphasize mineral diversity and potential economic impact for the state’s mining sectors.
Roy and Clarence Randall opened Randall Bros produce house in the former Rock Island Produce location. They will purchase eggs and poultry, offer a free culling service, and sell feeds. Catherine Enfield, formerly with Reisters and Rock Island Produce, will grade eggs.

Ninety-one officers and men died when the Turkish submarine Dumlupinar sank after a collision with the Swedish freighter Nalboland in the Dardanelles. Five crew were rescued, three died of injuries or went overboard, and rescue efforts were abandoned.
Mr and Mrs Mark Meyer and their seven month old son Kevin have settled in a new home at 909 Prospect Place after relocating from Charles City Iowa. Meyer works as a Blue Cross Blue Shield representative in Washington and Lowvlisa county. He previously worked at Dr Salsbury laboratories and holds membership in the EW and American Legion. Mrs Meyer is a charter member of the VFW auxiliary at Charles City. The family attends the Lutheran church.
Walter Parrell chairman of the Washington county Red Cross drive urges all county workers to complete reports immediately to enable blood donor efforts and the bloodmobile visit. About 500 to 600 have signed up to donate with 400 districts still needing reports. A Child Health Conference is set for April 1 1955 at the Washington County Health Unit with appointments by calling 488. The Farmers Union formed a new group near De Soto to assist local farmers.
Two cars were damaged with no injuries in a minor crash three miles south of Washington on Wayland Travel Saturday at 5 PM. Frank Miller Smith of route one Wayland rear ended Rose Lenora Shriver of Hills who had pulled onto the roadway shoulder. Smith swerved back after spotting a northbound vehicle and struck the Shriver car.
Washington volunteer fire men answered two calls before noon with no damage. A grass fire on North Marion Avenue and a trash fire in an incinerator by Marlowe's cleaners triggered alarms. A third alarm after 1 PM led to small fire along railroad tracks behind the Union Cafe.
Washington residents filled churches for Easter in bright spring weather. At the Presbyterian church midnight service featured The Seven Last Words of Christ with soloists and a dramatic lighting display. The YMCA hosted the 7 a.m sunrise service with music from the high school girls chorus and soloists, plus Easter decorations and a backlit stained glass display.
The Jaycees plan a bumper tape sale as part of a national Lite-A-Bumper drive. The reflective Scotchlite tape will be sold for auto bumpers and is approved by safety officials for road safety. Sale begins Saturday, April 11.
Washington reports the armed forces developed a rocket traveling about 2,700 miles per hour, four times the speed of sound. Dr. Jerome C. Hunsaker, head of NACA, mentioned the achievement during testimony before an appropriations subcommittee. A censored transcript of the secret hearing was released. NACA seeks 58.83 million dollars for operations and 14.6 million for new facilities for the coming year. Hunsaker said further research facilities are needed for missiles capable of about 4,600 mph, nearly seven times the speed of sound.
Mrs. Nevada Acheson 80 died at 6 this morning at her son Ivan's home in Des Moines. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Presbyterian church with burial in Columbus City cemetery. She was born February 6, 1873, daughter of Samuel H. and Mary Duncan. She married A. R. Acheson in 1895 and lived in Alliance Nebraska before his 1926 death, then moved to Columbus Junction. Survivors: son, one grandson, sister Anna Duncan, and brothers George N. and Clyde Duncan.
