Washington residents may place trash cans along alleys as the city’s sanitation truck resumes alley rounds starting Monday after weeks of soft roadways. The change returns pickup to scheduled alleys service for urban blocks.
In a dawn assault northwest of Saigon, a 600-man Communist battalion pressed a probe against a U S gun base. U S forces repelled the attack, with 81 insurgents killed and two Americans dead. U S dive bombers and artillery supported by helicopter gunships blasted enemy positions in the DMZ area, including a strike near Con Thien and another below the Ben Hai River, as the six week offensive continued.
A Friday night break-in at the Washington Lumber yard damaged merchandise with red paint spray and scattered records and supplies. Police investigated after workmen found an open wall safe and ransacked offices while manager Howard Hess noted little loot was taken but extensive damage and cleanup needed.
Dr. Denton A. Cooley inserted an artificial heart into 47 year old Haskell Earp of Skokie Illinois, the first operation of its kind. The procedure aimed to sustain a patient until a donor was found, with Earp reported in satisfactory condition.
A Royal Navy sailor rescued 3-year-old Julie Coslett who slipped beneath a train at Poole Station. He pulled her free, rolled with her between the rails, then returned to the moving train grinning and refusing identification. Station staff and passengers hailed him as a hero.
Lexington officials publish a plan to vacate certain roads within the city limits. The notice specifies affected paths and procedural steps for public comment and review by residents and stakeholders.
United Press International reports the early tornado season with watches across the Midwest. A twister touched down south of Kansas City causing minor damage at Lacyne and Drexel, Missouri, and the system moved through central Missouri with additional minor damages. Rain, hail, and flooding advisories followed in Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois while the Mississippi and Minnesota river basins saw snowmelt and rising rivers. Weather generally mild elsewhere with light coastal rain and warm inland readings.
Senate Republican leader David Stanely indicated court challenges to Iowa's 3 percent advertising and new construction taxes may be dropped if the legislature repeals the taxes promptly. He said supporters expect suits to end with repeal likely effective July 1, while Gov. Ray pursues similar action. The taxes, part of a 1967 package, could still raise several million if left in place. The Iowa Supreme Court has upheld the advertising tax. firms may seek US Supreme Court review. London hotel lobby sign urges guests to smile at each other.
In Newport, two workers died and ten injured when a hydrogen sulfide leak swept the Chemetron Corp plant area. Sheriff O'Dell described rapid collapse as officials sealed the leaking pipe unit and evacuated the facility. Larry Henry, 26, of Newport, and Claude Dalton, 53, of Sevierville, died on arrival at a local hospital.
In Des Moines the Iowa Senate adjourned to the weekend after a running skirmish between Republicans and Democrats over the Dirksen amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Senate leaders clashed over roll call requests and districting factors while debates on constitutional convention plans continued.
