Battle lines drawn as Iowa legislature eyes liquor and tax fight
Des Moines Iowa lawmakers prepare for a major clash over liquor by the drink and new taxes as the 1963 session nears key votes. The Senate schedules a Monday debate on price fixing while the House plans a Thursday hearing on short term securities. A broad tax measure would raise about 65 million dollars for school aid, drawing Democratic resistance over local spending limits and earmarking. Governor Hughes cautions the liquor bill may be too restrictive for wet lawmakers.
