April 16 Deadline Extended for Feed Grain Signup Iowa

Farmers in Iowa have through Monday April 16 to file applications for the 1962 feed grain program. Howard Lins, chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee of Washington county, said the date was extended from April 14 because the latter fell on a nonworking Saturday. The extension gives growers in 24 states two more weeks to qualify for diversion payments and price support on their 1962 crops. Only participants in the program will be eligible for price support on crops with a diversion plan.

Driver Killed When Car Plows House in Algona

An Algona man Duane Harold Anderson, 26, was fatally injured when his car left a turn and rammed the northwest Marshalltown home of Dr and Mrs B L Trey. He died hours later at Marshalltown Hospital from skull chest and hip injuries. The crash caused about 5000 dollars in property damage to the house and 1000 dollars to the 1957 car.

The United States and Britain warned ships and planes to avoid a designated Pacific area around Christmas Island. The U S test area spans 800 by 600 miles and will commence tests on April 15 unless a test ban with Russia is reached.

Relatives in Keota learn of Gary Zaiger 20 shot to death in Wilson North Carolina. Parents Emmert Zaiger and Nadine Bond are notified. grandparents George Bond are cited. Iowa Governor vows to fight plan to deactivate guard divisions

Iowa Governor Norman A. Erbe condemned Defense Department plans to deactivate the 34th Infantry Division and the 103rd Division, urging immediate reconsideration. Army plan to cut eight divisions and 58 000 reserves

The National Guard faces the main burden of a sweeping US Army proposal to eliminate eight divisions and 58,000 reserve personnel. Guard losses could total 35,000, reducing forces to about 365,000. reserves would fall to 277,000. Congress protests and hearings set for April 16.

Kennedy Plans Broad Transport Reforms to Reduce Federal Rules

President Kennedy sent Congress a comprehensive 6000 word transportation program aiming to cut air rail and bus subsidies and regulation. The plan calls for 500 million in three year rail and mass transit grants with two thirds federal funding and local match plus user charges and limited excise tax. It urges research mergers policy guidance for CBA and ICC and seeks speedier action to prevent erosion of transport capacity.

Brazilian President Leaves for New York

Brazilian President Joao Goulart departed Washington for New York with U.S. officials expressing confidence in his regime. Peter J. Hammen Dies After Illness in Iowa City

Peter J. Hammen 78 of Keota died early today at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after 10 days as a patient. He was a retired farmer born near Keota on March 7 1884.
