Delay Plea Today On Embezzlement Case In Ames

An insurance agent and his wife in Ames faced district court on embezzlement charges of about 68 412 from Ames Finance Co. Ben Haworth and Norma Jean Haworth were released on 2 500 bond each and the arraignment was postponed to 10 am Monday. The couple allegedly forged 180 loan applications and signatures to cover false loans over four years. The case stems from an audit that uncovered the losses and the company said it would continue operations.

Dogs for Research Bill Returns to Senate After House Amendments

The Iowa House approved amendments to the dogs for scientific research bill and sent it back to the Senate by an 87 to 20 vote. The measure allows shelters to supply unwant ed unclaimed dogs to licensed labs for up to five dollars per dog and requires a comfort standard and annual health department certifications. The House also added an eight to fifteen day holding period for shelters before transfer, while the Senate previously set a two day surrender.

Iowa Senate failed to vote on the road use tax fund allocation during a midday session. Senator D C Nolan explained the sliding scale that shifts percentages to municipalities while keeping total dollars steady as growth occurs.

Iowa Women Among Four Die In Kansas Collision

Three Iowa women were killed in Pratt Kansas when a Greendyke Transport gasoline truck collided with a car. Ed Volger of Medicine Lodge Kansas died in the truck cab. The Campbell sisters of New London and Mrs Grace Van Dyke of Mount Pleasant were identified or tentatively named among the victims. Authorities reported a tire blowout caused the crash on K-61 two miles northeast of Pratt with explosions and a grass fire.

Centennial Observance At Shorter AME Church

County group tours Capitol in Des Moines on Tuesday

A Farm Bureau sponsored bus tour brought Washington County residents to the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. The group included 15 junior high students and met Governor Erbe in his office. They lunched with Representative Richard Stephens and Senator Clifford Vance, then visited the state historical building.

Omnibus Iowa Tax Measure Faces Senate Panel

Iowa appropriations committee discussed an omnibus tax measure to raise 14 to 15 million dollars yearly for school aid and agricultural land tax credits. Support was mixed with some favoring increases if needed for the budget. funding would come from higher corporation and hotel taxes, a use tax on hard-to-get goods, liquor and beer duty hikes, and cigarette tax plus earmarked allocations for agricultural credits.

Kennedy Macmillan Hold White House Talks On Western Policy

Plan More Meetings On Emergency Feed Grain Program

Washington County Extension Service and ASC personnel announce additional meetings to explain the emergency feed grain program. The sessions will be held Saturday April 8 at 9 30 a m in the Washington County Court House and Monday April 10 at 8 p m at West Chester School. Gas Tax Extension Bill Goes to Erbe

Iowa motorists will continue paying a 6 cents a gallon gasoline tax with two cents of the levy directed to primary highway construction until Dec. 31 1961. The full 6 cents then funds road use projects including primary secondary farm to market and municipal streets per a House Senate agreement sent to Gov. Erbe.

Officers Installed At Ys Men’s Meeting In Washington

Washington Ys Men’s Club elected and installed new officers Tuesday evening led by district governor Robert Choate. Dr G J Nemmers heads the new slate with Tom Duncan receiving a 25 year pin from Ted Brown. Koy Fields announced 1535 reservations for the Iowa Regional Convention to be held in Washington this weekend. James Huff Dies In Muscatine Hospital

James Huff, elderly resident of Restopia in Columbus Junction, died late Tuesday afternoon at Muscatine General Hospital after being taken there a few hours earlier. The body is at the Dudgen McCully Funeral Home in Wapello.

Trading Stamp Curbs Approved

Iowa House passed a bill to base trading stamps on cash or trade, despite humor and debate. Rep Wayne Shaw led the measure with humorous anecdotes while Rep John Duffy argued for consumer rights. Bids for the Mid-Prairie High School near Wellman were opened at Kalona. Don L. Bron of Kansas City submitted the low general contract bid at 367000. Modern Refrigeration Plumbing and Heating of Cedar Rapids topped plumbing bids at 89477. Wilbur Miller of Iowa City was the low electrical bidder at 54205. Officials expressed satisfaction with the bidding and funds remaining for equipment.

Rites Here Saturday For Mrs. Southwell

Mrs. Caughey W. Southwell 73 died Tuesday in San Antonio Texas. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Latta officiating. Burial follows in Elm Grove Cemetery.
