William J. Todd waited 80 years to take a driving test because he feared Memphis streets. He passed recently, but while he was taking the test an automobile rammed his car, confirming his long held concern that the streets were dangerous.
Ninety-eight men are trapped in the Dumlupinar submarine at the bottom of the Dardanelles. Turkish Army says 76 may be dead as divers race to rescue 40 crew in a rear compartment. The sunken vessel collided with the Swedish freighter Naboland after maneuvers. An American destroyer Tir aided the rescue efforts amid strong currents.
An 18-year-old Marine private, Fred E. McManus, confessed killer, agrees to extradition and is flown toward New York. He faces murder charges in Rochester, where he killed William Braverman after a Midwest crime spree that left four others dead. His 16-year-old girlfriend Diane Weggeland is held as a material witness.
Washington reports former Rep. Leonard Hall of New York faces questions on accepting the vacancy left by C. Wesley Roberts. Hall urged Eisenhower to speak at Theodore Roosevelt memorial services while denying talks on party leadership. Governor Thomas E. Dewey endorsed Hall, boosting his bid. Langley of Washington praised his experience and said Eisenhower’s choice would be acceptable.
A new Schreck Anhydrous Ammonia bulk plant east of Washington Concrete along the railroad right of way is ready for business. Built by Schrock Fertilizer Service of Congerville in cooperation with Livingston Patterson Spray Corporation of Washington, it will supply farmers with liquid ammonia stored at 82.2 percent nitrogen. Tank cars deliver to the plant, transferring to a 90,000 gallon storage tank for distribution to field applicators. Large trucks carry ammonia to field sites for ground injection at six inches deep.
Charles E. Bohlen departed New York by plane Friday night for Moscow to assume his post as the United States first ambassador under Malenkov. The 48 year old diplomat declined to discuss policy matters saying they come from the State Department while preparing to shape future relations with Soviet and other Eastern bloc states.
Voters in the consolidated Noble district will go to the polls on April 22 for a special election to approve a proposed $50,000 bond issue to build a three room school replacing three rural schools. Official notice has been published.
In Harrisburg Illinois authorities said they dismantled a juvenile crime ring with two Kentucky teenagers and four Brookport youths arrested. Five youths were jailed locally and one in Metropolis. The group admitted 18 burglaries across southern Illinois and the Paducah area since late February, including eight in Harrisburg. Their largest haul was a dairy safe burglary at New Era Dairy, with an uncertain $50 or $60 reported by the youths versus a larger dairy claim.
American Sabrejets scored a possible kill against Soviet built Communist jets and damaged three others as Allied bombers hit Red supply areas. Ground fighting was light. It was the first clash in five days between Sabrejets and red MiG 15s. B26 bombers claimed destruction of 73 enemy trucks on the main west coast road network through Pyongyang.

DD S Meeker known as father of Mrs Leffell B Trask of Washington died March 30 in Laredo Missouri. Funeral services held Thursday at Laredo ChristianChurch burial followed in the local cemetery. Born November 6 1856 in Indiana he moved to Missouri in 1872 and married Sareh Catherine Peterie June 23 1881. Surviving seven children 18 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Pallbearers included six grandsons led by Eugene Trask.
Mrs. Blanche Quinn announced plans to open the Blanche and Lionel Cafe at 362 North Seventh Avenue in Washington in a building formerly hosting two similar businesses. The cafe, managed by Mrs. Quinn, will open Monday April 6.
Mrs Phoebe White 94 died at 1 AM at 403 South Second Avenue after years of illness. Born January 12 1859 in Belmont County Ohio she married William James White November 24 1885 in Morristown Ohio. Survived by five children two deceased a brother and two sisters and thirteen grandchildren. Funeral services through Jones Funeral Home with burial in Bethesda Ohio.
The FBI recovered nine religious oil paintings in Chicago from a Kentucky cathedral theft. Art expert Daniel Catton Rich valued the set at over 675000 dollars with Jan van Eyck's Descent of the Holy Ghost highlighted as possibly the era's rarest painting.
Merle George Dodder a prominent Louisa county farmer was found hanged Friday afternoon in a farm building. Coroner Dr J W Pence ruled death by own action and Dodder had been in ill health. He was born August 24 1960 and attended the State University of Iowa. He leaves a wife two daughters two sons one brother and his father with arrangements pending at Fairbanks funeral home Muscatine.
DES MOINES UP The long fight over colored oleo moves toward closure as the Iowa legislative committee leans to selling margarine in one pound molds. Senator X T Prentis says a Chicago plant visit showed triangular cuts are too expensive, with both houses approving the yellow oleo bill but the lower chamber opposing a Senate plan for one quarter pound triangles.
Rome reports President Luigi Einaudi dissolved both houses to allow a general election set for June 7 and 8. Premier Alcide De Gasperi requested the move after Communist resistance delayed electoral reforms in the upper chamber. The prior 1948 vote saw De Gasperi's Christian Democrats defeat the Communists.
London dispatch reports the release of 15 physicians accused of plotting against Soviet leaders is a broad good will move by Malenkov and fellow leaders. The action’s aim includes easing Russian and international opinion and signaling liberalization of the regime.
More than seven hundred children joined the fourth annual Jaycee Easter egg hunt in Sunset Park. prizes awarded for top egg finders in three age groups, with eggs packaged by the TTTs and Scouts helping police the area.

New York police charge 27 year old Anna Maier with murder after she threw two of her five children down an air shaft. Neighbors stopped a third attempt as Kenneth a 3 year old and Michael a month old were fatally injured four floors below. Authorities send Maier to Bellevue Hospital for mental observation.
President Eisenhower warns Western European nations to strengthen defenses as the NATO alliance marks its fourth anniversary. He stresses unity, military and economic strength, and the need to deter Soviet aims of world domination while defending freedom.
Army Secretary Robert T. Stevens returned from a Far East trip and told reporters the ammunition supply in Korea is good and will improve. He noted the supply was adequate at several locations and affirmed the Eighth Army is well supplied to carry out its mission, though he would not specify whether it is defensive or offensive.
Police said Dr Harald A Conner associate professor of marketing at a New York university killed his wife and two children in a Pleasant Garden apartment then killed himself with a knife. Authorities noted a past nervous breakdown and psychiatrist care. Conner was a devout organist at a local church.
