Federal agents from Chicago and the Ottumwa district DA confirmed a black market sugar ring centered in Ottumwa. Since September, tavern owners and an Ottumwa farmer diverted hundreds of thousands of pounds, buying sugar for about $10 per 100 pounds and selling at $30, with counterfeit ration stamps used in Chicago. Tractor wreck kills second victim in Burlinton Zephyr crash
In Downers Grove Illinois a Burlington railroad zephyr struck a tractor from an International Harvester Co shipment heading for Chile. The crash injured 34 and a second victim died as investigators opened a three way inquiry into the cause. Engineer Clarence C Thurston said he could not slow in time as the tractor toppled from a westbound freight. The engine jumped the track and the passenger car plowed into the Downers Grove depot. The tractor weighed 18 tons and the flat car carrying it was being moved from the freight near Aurora for examination.
