About five thousand anti Ky Buddhists roamed Saigon in a night of unrest shouting Yankee go home. They assaulted a U.S. soldier, overturned cars, and attempted to seize the main radio station while passing the Westmoreland residence in a bid to force American withdrawal from Viet Nam.
Mrs. Robert Day Iowa UNICEF state representative returns from a two day workshop in New Orleans and a UNICEF project tour in Guatemala. She cites malnutrition relief costing 37.5 cents per child daily and praises local mothers clubs and rural centers aided by volunteers. Detailing visits to Palin and Pattan, she notes progress and gratitude toward UNICEF support.
Sunken U S H bomb remains unfound off Palomares Spain as a lifting cable broke last week sending the device to a soft seabed slope. Recovery teams estimate weeks more of uncertain search while mud churn and cloudy conditions hinder guided cable operations and submersible probes.
Two companies of the 1st Air Cavalry trapped an estimated VC company about 100 men in a valley near Chu Pong mountain two miles east of the Cambodian border. After four hours of fighting, they counted 10 VC killed with reports of 15 more in other actions. Air strikes, artillery, riot gas, and helicopter support were used. Elsewhere Buddhist demonstrations surged in Da Nang with 10,000 protesters calling for civilian rule.
In Surfside Florida two men and a blonde in slacks and sneakers robbed Trabert-Hoeffer Jewelry, taking about 500000 dollars in gems. Clerks Lillian Simmons and Ruth Fishman were bound as thieves fled with a 16 karat ring worth 40000 dollars and other valuables. Officer statements note the trio entered before opening hour and fled under heavy bags.
A lull in winds was hoped to ease a 15 day forest fire crisis across South Carolina as 30,000 plus acres burned. A 15 mile blaze threatened Gaston in Lexington County while Bethune firefighters battled a northern edge fire. National Guardsmen and volunteers aided response across 11 counties with 375 guardsmen deployed.
Harry Gold, the Philadelphia biochemist and key go between for nuclear scientist Klaus Fuchs, is granted parole and will be released May 18 after serving over 15 years of a 30 year spy sentence. His testimony helped convict Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and link Morton Sobell to the same conspiracy.
A 13 year old Indianola girl, Deborah Pierce, remains in serious condition at Blank Children's Hospital Des Moines with the dangerous form of infectious meningitis. Diagnosed first by Dr L R Cornish of Indianola, she is a seventh grader at Indianola Junior High School. The case follows Iowa's second meningitis report in three weeks, after Paula Elgin of Adair Casey High School died March 11.
Terry Lee Shelton, 25, is jailed in Washington County on a $10,000 bond after police arrest at Worley’s Citgo on West Madison following a neighbor’s tip. He allegedly broke a window and entered the station around 1:00 a.m. and fled with the cash register missing. Shelton had recently been paroled from Anamosa Reformatory.
In Marseilles two large blasts rocked the Liberian owned tanker Olympic Honour, causing a massive fire. At least one death reported with 25 sailors and four firemen injured. Crew of 38, ship in drydock from Golfhaven Denmark, after arrival March 26. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours as trapped crewmen were seen in a tank. Port workers attempted to reach them despite new explosions.
Federal Judge Alexander Holtzoff ordered the Railway Firemen and Enginemen union to show cause why it should not face contempt for a three day strike against eight railroads affecting about 150000 workers in 38 states. A 500000 dollar daily fine and 10000 dollar daily fine for the BLFE president were proposed if contempt is found.
A petition for a re hearing has been filed with the Iowa Supreme Court over the custody of Mark Painter eight. Harold Painter of Walnut Creek California filed the petition and the ICLU acting as friend of the court argued the decision to award custody to Dwight Baumister Ames was under a repealed law. The ICLU said the 1963 law favors natural parents in custody cases.
KEOSAUQUA Iowa two farmer neighbors Allan Humble 34 and Jim Hurley 62 were killed when a bulldozer used to pull trees from a ditch rolled back crushing them against a stump Humble operated the machine Hurley attached chains to trees Sheriff Ville Lee said the cause of the roll back is undetermined and another Keosauqua resident Donald Caruthers was present and could not move the stuck brakes.
United Press International reports Iowa will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies tonight and Sunday with gusty winds from 30 to 50 mph. Occasional showers are likely across most of the state tonight and Sunday morning. Lows will be in the 30s tonight.
