West Branch names Hutchcroft new superintendent
Edward L. Hutchcroft, longtime Washington Community School District assistant superintendent, will become West Branch community schools superintendent effective July 1. He succeeds John Spiess, who leaves to join the Iowa Center for Research in School Administration at the University of Iowa. Hutchcroft's career includes Barnes City teacher, Kalona high school principal, and post in Washington as business education teacher and elementary principal, then assistant superintendent and curriculum and transportation director. Orville Long announced Friday night street cleaning in the business district, requiring all cars to be removed from the square and nearby streets after midnight Fridays.

Baby Abandoned in Fort Madison Parked Car
Authorities probe parents of a male infant found in a parked car by a bowling alley in Fort Madison Iowa. Police say a transient family suspected of abandoning the baby was stopped yesterday. The mother, pregnant with several children, was not believed to have delivered. The infant weighed about five pounds and five ounces and was about five days old when found.
