Sioux City reports a local girl selected to pin a flower on President Roosevelt during Poppy Day activities next month. The chosen child is Joyce Bradish, 4, of Sioux City, per letters to her aunt Mrs. A. Schwalley.
DES MOINES Polk district court clerk reports no marriage licenses issued on April 1 with Deputy Jerke citing April Fool's day as reason. Two petitions filed for marriage. two others were denied.
Lorence Fuhrmeister a University of Iowa sophomore from near North Liberty earned a trip to a hosiery plant in Indiana for the top work in the college division over the last 12 weeks. He will depart Iowa City Saturday night.
Fire broke out at the B. E. Kirby residence in southwest Mason City with firefighters delayed as their truck became stuck in mud on the street. The house sustained covert damage.
Virgil Rogers eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Paul Rogers is in a hospital with a fractured skull after falling down a hay chute at their farm home near Waterloo. He was expected to recover, having fallen there three times previously without injury.
Edewr Ro Rav Gan 68, Iowa curator, leaves after a 29 year career. He appeals to contributors to continue supporting the museum with gifts and asks those considering deposits or use of materials to disregard his retirement.
In Manchester, Mrs. ary Beck and the Rev A E Hursh celebrate their eighty ninth birthdays as the remaining members of a twelve child family with two sets of twins. Beck is a widow with two twin pairs. Hursh is a retired United Brethren minister.
Mrs Margaret Caswell celebrated her 100th birthday with her three children present as well as relatives from Waverly and Nashua. Born in Ireland she arrived in New York at six months old with two sisters and later married in Oregon Illinois. She moved to Nashua 63 years ago by covered wagon and endured pioneer life.
A baby named Charles Peter Johnston was born to Mr and Mrs Henry Johnston of Albia weighing less than one pound. Dr R A Smith, attending physician, said the unit would not balance the scales so the exact weight could not be determined. The infant was kept in an improvised incubator at the parents home.
John A. Roberts, a night watchman for Lake Shore Tire & Rubber Co., suffered a crushed left leg when an iron tire mold weighing about 500 pounds fell from a wall hook and pinned him to the floor as he walked through the plant. He struggled to lift the mold back onto the hook in a failed attempt to free himself.
State Treasurer Leo J. Weeman reported beer tax collections totaling 666,932.63 for the period, up 7,825.90 from a year earlier, while gasoline tax receipts reached 741,388.31. Overall levies across categories contributed to a year’s total of 197,499.66 for beer and 741,388.31 for gasoline in arch. era records.
Iowa City April 2 Walter H Rhodes faced three hours of grilling as prosecutors claim he confessed to murdering his wife with dynamite to show love for another woman. Sheriff McComas quoted Rhodes saying I dont know why I done it and later I'm guilty and am ready to pay the penalty. Judge Gaffney reserved ruling on admissibility amid defense objections.
Two armed men attacked a payroll messenger near Newnan Georgia and fled in a high powered blue car with $7,000 in cash. The holdup occurred at the Aomeo mills area and the suspects escaped prior to police arrival.
Mrs Allan Brook of Winfield arrived today for a visit with her daughter Miss Blanche Brook.
About 150 deputy sheriffs clashed with several hundred strikers and union officials in Albert Lea Minnesota as a court order sought to oust strikers from properties tied to the American Gas Machine plant and trucking firms. Injuries were reported and six pickets were seized as fear gas bombs and clubs were used.
Thousands of sitdown strikers were evacuated today from two auto plants in Pontiac Michigan by order of union officials. One site was a Fisher Body plant and the other a Yellow Cab plant, as protests continued.

Harley Carter former mayor of Fairfield was acquitted by a district court jury after a four week trial and 16 hour deliberation. The forgery case stemmed from a contract between a closed bank and Carter and involved petition by D C rates state superintendent of banking. The Iowa supreme court had previously ordered a new trial after his earlier 15 year sentence.
Funeral services for John C. Henry 80 will be Sunday at 2 PM at Valley church conducted by Rev. Carl W. Klein. Henry born June 30 1857 in Carlisle Pa son of R W Henry. moved to Dutch Creek township in 1866. married Barbara Horning January 10 1880. survived by four sons and one daughter.
The Iowa House rejected exempting all oil stations from the chain store tax by a 52 to 53 vote. Hwy patrol powers may extend to arrest traffic violators if a senate bill passes. Governor Kraschel urges a rural power program and a cooperative generating plant amendment. Miss Helen Hamilton of Newton to visit Miss Mary Welch.
Joan Schroeder, daughter of Roy and Mrs Schroeder of Ainsworth, is staying at the R N G Wessler home while receiving treatment for a broken arm from a pony fall.
George Gibson of Cedar Rapids was in town on business today and survived by two brothers and two sisters. Surviving children named are John Irvin and Lee who live near Keota with Andy of Pleasant Plain. Also listed is Mrs Maude Walton of Washington.
Des Moines writer C. C. Clifton reports collapse links in which Art Anderson former Wellman and Washington banker led a Clinton bank presidency before last fall. The Clinton brewery under reorganization, Lion Finance of Des Moines in receivership, and the Davenport Tri City Star loaned funds during Anderson’s tenure. Oral Sweet’s car deals and federal probes are noted, with Uncle Sam said to have bankers examining retirement era transactions.
President Roosevelt warned that a rapid rise in durable goods production over consumer goods signals trouble. He urged curbing durable goods spending while boosting consumer goods, noting past shifts led to lower production and prices. He cited steel and copper prices and described government purchases tied to PWA extension discussions with congressmen.
Fred Adams, 21, was executed at Campbell Missouri for the murder of a night marshal. The crowd of over 1,000 witnessed the hanging after four reprieves. The trap was sprung at 8:05 pm and the coroner later announced his death.

Washington residents recall the adage April showers bring May flowers as snow fell this morning, melted later, with another snowfall forecast. March moisture was below normal at 1.82 inches, though snow fell on four days, peaking at 3.8 inches on the 20th, with temperatures ranging from 13 to 68 degrees.
Seven people died and at least fifty were injured when two electric suburban trains collided head on at Battersea Park station. Police say many of the injured are in critical condition as commuters traveled during the early morning rush.
More than 400000 miners in the eastern soft coal field suspended operations as operators refused to approve a two year wage contract. UMW president John L Lewis said the move means no work until a contract is signed. Miners in 24 states stayed home, with maintenance crews authorized to prevent fires and floods.
A jury awarded Mrs. William G. Wood administratrix of her husband’s estate $6500 in damages against Ralph W. Moore of Washington. The suit, filed for $25,000, stemmed from a two year old accident near Monroe when Wood was killed after a tire repair stop. Foreman Lyle Fesler led the panel after ten hours of deliberation. The case may be appealed to the Town supreme court. Judge J G Patterson will recess today and then return to Washington for a brief session next week.
