Heavy early voting was reported across Nebraska as polls opened with sunny weather and high interest in key Democratic and Republican contests. Officials described turnout as very heavy in Omaha and Lincoln with long ballots and possible record participation in the state.
Wisconsin voters faced mild spring weather with temperatures from the 30s to 40s and light rain in one area as Sen. Rupert A and rivals Harold Stassen and Gov. Earl Warren aimed for a high turnout in the state GOP primary. Early reporting from Milwaukee and Madison showed heavy voting as campaigns intensified and delegates for 40 GOP slots remained to be awarded.
Saturday announcements reveal winners in the annual Iowa Press Women writing contest. About 260 entries were judged at the spring banquet in Iowa City with first place awards going to Keith M. Gates Kelona News and Violet Lunnquist Anthon Herald tied for a miscellaneous category. First place entries advance to the National Federation of Press Women contest.
President Truman invited Senator Frank Chelf to the White House to discuss the House judiciary subcommittee inquiry into Attorney General Howard McGrath. The aim is to ease White House approval for prior access to information and to resolve questions about McGrath’s finances amid Stassen charges.
Twelve American airmen were killed in two bomber crashes in Japan. Nine crewmen died when a B 29 struck a mountainside 40 miles northwest of Tokyo. two were thrown clear and survived. A B 26 on patrol crashed into the sea near Hokkaido Island with two bodies recovered. The third crewman was missing.
Twenty nine convicts, waterlogged and famished, were driven from a besieged wing of the New Jersey state prison after ten tear gas bombs were dropped through ventilators. They surrendered one by one to Warden William H. Carty and were hospitalized under guard for treatment and discipline.
A Washington FFA member at the high school will receive a 200 scholarship to Iowa State College. The award is funded by Ray Glover of the Washington feed and hatchery at the annual FRA parent son banquet in the Lincoln school gym. Leonard Tindal commends the act as beneficial to the community.
At noon today workmen struggled to free a heavily loaded semi from mud in the court house parking lot. The driver was stopped by authorities and charged with an over loaded truck and lacking proper highway licenses.
Seoul Korea AP UPI American Sabrejets destroyed or damaged 25 Communist MIGs in a single day, a Korean War record. Jet aces include Col Francis S Gabreski of Oil City Pa whose five and a half kills make him the eighth jet ace in history.
Ellery Newton Foster a long time Wellman resident banker and Maplescrest Turkey vice president died at his Wellman home. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wellman Methodist Church with Rev D C Bissinger. Burial in Wellman cemetery. Surviving are wife Mable Jackson Foster son James Ellery Foster daughter Mrs Baxter Freese four brothers. World War I Air Corps veteran and former Wellman city council member.
The Floyd River floodwaters began receding from about 200 Sioux City area homes as Big Sioux River flooding expanded across northwestern Iowa. Officials warned further cresting from Westfield to North Sioux City and anticipated high water in Sioux City tonight through Thursday. Residents previously affected near North Sioux City and the western edge of Sioux City faced renewed flood warnings.
John Stephens was named president of the Washington County Young Republican organization at the first meeting held Monday evening at the courthouse. Officers include Ellen Reed as vice president Keith Vetter as secretary and D K Pence as treasurer.
Members of the Woman’s International Bowling Congress remind entrants to turn in entry fees by April 4 for the Washington bowling handicap tournament at Melody Lane. The women’s event, to be held Saturday and Sunday, will include singles doubles and team competitions with cash prizes and an all events winner.
Funeral services for Mrs Arthur Dawson were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Jones funeral home with Rev. W. J. Stevens presiding. Burial took place in Elm Grove Cemetery. Music provided by Linwell and Betty Fritz. Pallbearers named Forrest Lance Leo Marie Harold Klopfenstein J. B. Hoxworth Walter Jungbluth.
West Chester High School presents a one act festival of the sophomore class with the play Of All Things performed in a living room setting. The cast includes Marvin Crile Phyllis Statler Larry Burroughs Isherry Anderson Martha Stephens Larry Stout Lester Wehr Sorma Chalupa with Kathy Fisher prompting and Miss Alice Bo Resele directing.
An atomic bomb dropped from a U S Air Force bomber over Frenchman s Flat proving grounds north of Las Vegas shook the resort city as merchants opened for business Officials confirmed the test the first at Frenchman s Flat since 1951 No troops or animals participated and two high explosive pre shots checked shock directions the blast was barely visible and not audible locally.

In a message to American editors, Soviet Premier Stalin said World War III is not closer now than two or three years ago. The replies were relayed by Ambassador Zarubin and two forms of delivery noted, with responses touching on German unification and peaceful coexistence of capitalism and communism.
Funeral services for Arthur Wright 74 will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jones funeral home with Dr. C. R. Reed officiating. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. Wright died Monday evening at Mercy hospital Davenport after a two week illness. He was born October 7, 1877 in Richmond Iowa. He lived in Keota and Washington 18 years and was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by one sister Mrs. Earl Corbin Davenport.
Speaker Sam Rayburn of Texas said he is not a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. Vice President Alben Barkley declined to commit himself. The remarks followed a White House conference after President Truman said he would not run again. Rayburn called the question a definite no.
Weather forecast for Des Moines shows a fair period this afternoon tonight and Wednesday. Temperature highs reach 50 to 60 degrees with lows around 28 to 83. Wednesday highs 45 to 50 in the north and 55 to 60 in the south. Thursday looks partly cloudy and slightly warmer.
