Iowa becomes third state to ratify the 22nd amendment as the House passes a joint resolution to limit presidents to two terms. Senate action followed, now awaits governor, with 84 to 8 vote and 16 not voting. Maine and Michigan also ratified, needing 33 states total for approval.
March receipts at the county treasurer’s office reached 327287.46 dollars excluding a homestead credit check of over 7000. With nearly 600000 paid year to date, about 55 percent of annual taxes are collected. Some March payments arrive by mail after March end and may be credited later due to two ill deputies.
Des Moines Iowa April 1 A bill to ban the closed shop won approval in the Iowa Senate by 36 to 12 after about four hours of debate. Six amendments were approved including a reduced penalty to 100 dollars fine or 30 days in jail for violations. others modified the policy to protect the right to work regardless of union membership. The measure sets a right to work policy for the state.
Des Moines reports the Iowa House passed two major school aid measures totaling 11.9 million dollars, with fears of future tax raises. The general aid bill allocates eight million annually on an attendance basis and elementary and high school per pupil rates, while a five million annual credit for agricultural land is approved.
Judge R G Yoder granted the divorce in the case Maxine Turner versus Charles Turner. The court denied the plaintiff's petition for a decree, awarded custody of Mary Mae Turner to the plaintiff, and custody of the other four children to the cross petitioner. The cross petitioner must pay $1000 and $15 monthly for Mary Mae's support. Turner receives all personal property and credits. A separate dismissal was filed in Leila White versus Keith R White.

Stephen Petroci a 24 year old chiropractic student held on a first degree murder charge for the death of his landlord Ead Ward Purse 62 hanged himself in the county jail in Davenport Iowa His body was found in the shower by fellow prisoner Lester Allison 20 Petroci left two notes one to cellmate Andy McCormick 24 and another to his family reiterating that he did not poison his landlord Petroci had been charged with murder after Purse was found dead initially ruled a suicide and later tied to Petroci who admitted placing sleeping pills in milk but later repudiated the confession claiming hypnosis He pleaded innocent at a preliminary arraignment and is held without bond awaiting counsel.
Washington veterans are urged to attend tonight's American Legion meeting at the city hall legion rooms. Leon Beatty post hosts with Ss. W. Easter as program chairman, promising a meeting of special interest to veterans of both wars. Membership not required. Refreshments served after.

A coroner's jury in Lakota Iowa ruled the death of Michael Flynn 17 a farm youth near Elmore Minnesota accidental. Witnesses said his brother Eugene twirled a loaded revolver on his finger when it discharged.

Rodney Arnold sold his barber shop on South Marion avenue to Don Hazen with the transfer effective today. Hazen, a nine year veteran of the shop in the Hotel Washington building, will work part time while Frank Shepherd, long time employee, stays on with the new owner.
Police say two brothers recently back from Elmore were involved in a shooting incident. The older brother drew a revolver to show Michael and Eugene remained in a distressed state, kept in county jail overnight for his own safety.
King George II died at 66 in Athens from angina pectoris. Greece faced a political crisis as the monarchist government feared leftist factions might seize on the death to challenge the throne. Paul was called to take oath. Britain had planned to end aid, while the US Congress debated a $400 million Greek Turkish aid package.
Ernie Kriner of Bloomfield purchased the Maid Rite sandwich shop from Clint R. Burk with possession set for Monday April 7. Burk opened the shop on South Marion avenue in 1936 and had owned it seven years. The Kriners plan to move to Washington soon and Mrs. Kriner will help in running the shop.
The council of foreign ministers announced no decision on German reparations after an informal secret meeting in Moscow. Only four ministers with two advisors each attended, and a brief communique said talks focused on industry levels with no result, to resume formally tomorrow.
The superintendents of schools in eleven southeastern Iowa counties meet in Washington at Supt Lester B Krabill's office to discuss various aspects of their work. Counties represented are Mahaska Henry Johnson Jefferson Keokuk Muscatine Lee Appanoose Wapello and Washington. Leonard Davies of the Iowa State Educational Association will speak this afternoon on new legislation affecting schools. L E Johnson of Centerville is chairman and J G Turner of Ottumwa secretary.
Rep. Pred L. Crawford of Michigan will be the principal speaker at a Davenport dinner April 14 as part of the Republican women organizing for victory conference. Mrs. Addison R. B. Green of Holyoke Massachusetts will also speak and lead conference arrangements. More than 100 party officials from 14 Midwest states are expected to attend.
