A farmer named Jack H. Heckart aged 65 of Drakesville area died from injuries after a wagon team jerked forward while dragging a leg from a creek. A heavy tree rolled onto him causing fatal trauma.
Mrs. E. C. G. Brown Jr. swerved to avoid a boy and struck a telephone pole in Lawton. Her daughters Barbara 5 and Shirley 4 were treated for minor injuries, while Dickie Gray 8 suffered a scalp wound.
Mrs. George, 20, pulled her 2 year old from a street car track just before a car appeared. She was struck by the car and drawn beneath it but survived. the baby escaped with minor injuries and both are hospitalized in serious but not critical condition.
Iowa Bar Association moves Polk County District Court to enjoin Carleton D. Beh Co and two lawyers from soliciting municipal legal work. Petition claims the firm offers bond related services and that a company cannot be licensed to practice law, making Beh's actions unlawful.
Waldorf Junior College Forest City won first place in the junior college forensic tournament in Iowa City after mumps reduced their team to two. Members Verne Andersen Lawrence Andersen Marjorie Peterson and Ardyce Branstad competed with Missa Pranstad sidelined. Andersen competed solo and won among 18 teams. Coach Leonard Andersen is Lawrence’s brother.
About 2000 Midwest industrial engineers attended the annual management conference at the State University of Iowa. A Flagier of Procter and Gamble demonstrated saving $16 000 by studying janitorial mops and their use. He said a knobbed mop was more efficient than a plain handle model.
Ottumwa district court judge ruled against the Federal Land Bank of Omaha in a suit seeking about 4500 dollars. The decision held that former attorney John F Webber had apparent authority to indorse and cash checks, leading the Ottumwa bank to honor and indorse them.
A Civic petition circulated in the community urges Congress to strengthen neutrality laws, end loans to nations at war, and keep battleships and soldiers out of foreign war zones. It calls for opposition to administration aggression and signs mailed to the Journal office. WE HAVE NO BOYS TO SLAUGHTER.
Pope Pius telegraphed blessing to General Francisco Franco and the Spanish people as the United States announced formal recognition of Franco’s government. Secretary Hull said normal diplomatic relations are established unconditionally, with Roosevelt lifting the arms embargo to Spain.
Wayne Norman reports that about 82 percent of Washington county farmers will join the 1939 AAA farm benefit program based on 1,947 of 2,226 farms heard. Participation stands at 52 percent with 1,602 taking part. 45 percent last year. The project covers most townships with similar completion levels.
Judge Frank Beechly adjourned court late yesterday afternoon to next Wednesday after steps began on the King versus Livesey damage suit. Opening statements were made by L J Kehoe for the plaintiff and by Des Moines attorney Stewart and Iowa City attorney Cahill for the defendants William Livezey and Okey and Margaret Schubert. Only one plaintiff witness had been examined when the session ended. The case involves damages for injuries from a bus collision near Iowa City. Jury was excused for possible recall. other matters require attention early next week. A new term opens at Sigourney for Keokuk county on April 10, a week from Monday.
Frank Green age 20 from Dallas Texas died from injuries after an automobile crash near Mason City Iowa. He was riding with M A Phillips 28 of Waterloo who suffered minor injuries. Phillips had picked up Green at Faribault Minnesota. The other vehicle was driven by T G McDermott 74 of Mason City attorney.
Washington county leaders in Sunday school circles will attend the funeral for Walter Hutton longtime secretary of the Iowa State Sunday School Council of Religious Education. The services are set for 10 am Monday at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines with burial at Cedar Vale. Hutton, who died in Sterling Kansas, lived at 1990 Woodland Avenue Des Moines.
Mr and Mrs W B Kerr returned Thursday from San Clemente California where they spent the winter with their daughter Mrs Russell Manning and family.
Washington high tuba soloist Milo Steele placed in division one this morning. Wayland Sigourney tied in division one for cornet solo. Kalona Sigourney tied for flute solo. Washington's other ratings include division two in several solos. Judges from Iowa colleges and high schools listed. Afternoon events include baton twirling clarinet oboe bassoon solos brass ensembles concert band and violin and viola solos.
Washington high school earned division one ratings in soprano solo mezzo-soprano solo contralto solo girls sextet and mixed quartet with five of eight vocal entries rated division one. Other towns performed well with multiple division one ratings and strong showings across glee clubs quartets and solos. Winners advance to the district contest in Mount Pleasant on April 14 and 15.

The Washington area on April 1 reports spring is about two weeks later than last year. A frost on the night before April 1, 1938, damaged prospects, trees were in bloom earlier then. This year fruit trees lag, with similar temperatures not causing earlier damage. last night's low was 40, high 60, and .24 inches of rain fell yesterday evening.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Blankenhorn and their son Donald of Crawfordsville were seen shopping here this morning.
The CCC will run thirty camps in Iowa from April 1 to September 20 with up to 6000 enrollees. Camps will continue the winter total and relocate positions as needed for conservation work during the period.
Graveside services for Yaro Matucha known as Mike will be held at Elm Grove cemetery Sunday afternoon at 4 O clock. He died suddenly Thursday morning in Tipton. He was brother of Will Matucha of Washington and son of Mr and Mrs John Matucha. A Tipton funeral service is planned for 1 pm tomorrow.
Adolf Hitler declared Germany ready for war if Britain pursues conflict and warned that British opposition could end the Anglo-German naval pact and Munich agreement. The four sentence broadcast from Wilhelmshaven was interrupted by radio officials citing line disturbance between Wilhelmshaven and Berlin.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce says the 1939 membership drive nears completion with 205 members already counted and potential totals up to 225. Last year’s 183 members set a record, while finances improve as the current budget surpasses 3,000 dollars, compared with 2,300 last year. Busby Manufacturing and Washington Concrete added to the roster.
Oleeta Stewart aged 68 died at 4 29 a m at Washington county hospital after a brief illness. She was taken to the hospital Wednesday night and funeral arrangements are by Jones Funeral home pending the arrival of her sister Gertrude Bowman of Washington D C. A brother A T Stewart of Washington D C also survives.
A body is brought here for burial and the casket will be opened at the cemetery tomorrow.
