In Oskaloosa, attorney Wilson argues for Phil Conklin, claiming strong circumstantial evidence supports innocence. He challenges motive, notes Mrs. Conklin’s worried finances, past kindness, and lack of insurance, while criticizing state witnesses and the timing of death and rigor mortis.
The jury found Phil Conklin not guilty of murdering his wife after one ballot for acquittal and a second ballot for conviction shifted to acquittal. Foreman Bailey announced the verdict at about 4 45 p m as Conklin and his family waited anxiously.
