Legion Prepares Great Fourth of July Program
The Fourth of July will open with a 9 60 band concert in Central Park under clear skies. A horseshoe pitching contest follows at 9 30 on the Methodist church lot with $25 in prizes and a $0.50 entry fee. A 10 o’clock parade features decorated cars ponies and riders with multiple prize categories. Carnival attractions by Isler Carnival Co will occupy the square all day. Gov John Hammill is scheduled to speak at 2 0 p m on the City Hall lawn.

Winds wreak widespread damage to farms near Washington
A southwest wind Friday struck farms around Washington causing extensive destruction. C. W. Gray and Been blossom barns were toppled or ruined, corn cribs and sheds demolished, and houses largely spared. Several other farms including Swift, Wheelan and Wagner reported major losses to barns, windmills, sheds, and trees.
Thunderstorm Strikes West Third Street Causing Alarm
A bolt of lightning hit a West Third Street telephone wire and entered W. H. Wells's house amid a heavy rain and thunder. Fire crews reported no damage as crowds gathered during Fred West's funeral at St. James church where lights failed. Severe wind toppled trees and blew down corn east of the city, uprooting large trees between Been Blossom and Gray farms.

The event on East Main Street at 1 30 p m offers boys and girls bicycle races with prizes including wrist watches and cash. A 2 30 p m baseball game at Washington Ball Park pits Washington Indees against Columbus Junction with a suggested lineup. Band concerts, balloon ascension with parachute drop, two dances, and continuous theatre shows fill the day with music and entertainment.

Convention Call Issued For County Delegates
The republican county convention will meet in the Washington County Court House at 11 AM on Saturday June 30 to choose eleven delegates for the Des Moines state convention July 18 and eleven for the Cedar Rapids judicial convention July 25. Each precinct has specified representation and the meeting may address other business as needed. G. E. Mace is the County Chairman.

Ottumwa to Build County Maintenance Shed for Road Gear
Bids opened in Ottumwa for an 85 by 30 foot hollow tile maintenance garage across from the American Pearl Button plant, to house state road machinery and shop space. The project includes a 12 foot ceiling, concrete shop floor, corrugated iron roof, and a separate 20 by 20 office, with four such sheds planned in the district. Two Men Held on Liquor Transport Charge
Deputy Sheriff Fred Sweet and Marshall Oscar Haney arrested Lloyd Beaver and Rollie Rhodes on illegal liquor transportation near the No. 11 school house. Six gallons were found in a hidden compartment of a car, and the men were bound over to the September grand jury with bonds set at 1000.

White Yard Co. Plans New Fireproof Lumber Yard
The White Yard Company will begin immediate construction of a larger fireproof lumber yard on a new site adjoining the coal sheds. The plan includes a 76 foot wide yard 117 feet deep, a separate shop and office, and a rear yard with a fire wall. The project follows a Cedar Rapids style and mirrors a recent Cedar Rapids yard, with hollow tile and exterior facing tiles, a fireproof vault, and a 14 foot high side wall. The construction team also recently finished Wellman Creamery and works on the McIntosh home, with bids pending on a Washington county job. Members are J. Karel, L. Wilson, and Nick Roth.
