Almon Dewey Sails for European Trip
Almon Dewey of Des Moines sailed from New York aboard the S S Lafayette at noon June 13 for a six week European study tour. He will stop at Plymouth England London and Saint Spirans before Paris and the Sorbonne. Dewey plans six weeks of study and French conversation and returns Sept 7 to resume law studies at the University of Iowa. He is the son of Judge and Mrs C A Dewey.

Gospel Building Now in Service Opens with Band

Second Car Soy Beans Is Secured
Chairman Carl W. Klein of the Washington county emergency relief committee announced a second car of soybeans for farmers unable to pay for seed. The 1 000 bushel shipment from St Louis arrived Monday, aiding about 101 farmers who received seed from the first car and as many from the second. Beans are free for seed but beneficiaries will work to cover costs on a later project.

Funeral services for James Mitchell Thompson who died June 13 at 85 were held Friday at two at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Dr F W Eastwood and burial followed at Woodlawn cemetery He was last commander of I G White post G A R and rode for the pony express before the Civil War He served in the west during the war and in Company F Eleventh Ohio Cavalry afterward He worked as a printer in Ohio Des Moines and Washington retiring at 78 He was born March 29 1846 in Canada to a Presbyterian minister and married Mary Gorman in 1871 He leaves two daughters Nettie Thompson and Mrs Elmer Meredith, and had been frail in recent years but active downtown until last winter.

Wellman Youths Auto Wreck Near Keota
John Durst of Wellman and two Keota girls Elizabeth Erdice and Mary Catherine Simmons were in a wreck three miles southwest of Keota on Sunday evening. The Durst Chevrolet pickup had steering gear trouble climbing a hill. the vehicle was damaged beyond repair. Erdice suffered serious facial and bodily cuts while Simmons sustained severe injuries to her hand and leg with ligaments cut in the left wrist. condition details were not fully known.

Riverside Saddle Theft Arrest Draws Muscatine Bond
Martin Hartzler of Muscatine, once from Riverside, was arrested in Muscatine on a saddle theft charge from Dr. George Godlove’s Riverside barn last summer. He posted bond for his appearance before Justice J. E. Bovee next Monday. The saddle was recovered by Deputy H. M. Putnam from a Johnson County man involved in a sale. it is held at the sheriff’s office for return after the case.

Mrs Mary D Newell aged 80 widow of Thomas Newell died at her Concord township home near Columbus Junction after a short illness.
