Rollie P H Optenberg reports he and his wife arrived safely at Triangle F Ranch in Durant Wyoming after a rough trip marked by mud snow and rain. He describes stunning high country scenery in the Rockies and notes they are far from civilization with pristine nature intact.
Otis J. Millsap, a Shaffer Motor Co. Oldsmobile salesman from Cedar Rapids, is jailed in Washington County on a larceny charge after claiming he was robbed of a Shaffer Oldsmobile near Columbus Junction. He was bound over to the September grand jury with bond set at 2500, authorities deeming his account fishy.
Edwin T Meredith prominent Iowa Democrat and publishing magnate died of heart failure at age 51. Services were held at Consistory Temple Des Moines with Rev Elmer Nelson Owen officiating. He served as U S Secretary of Agriculture under Woodrow Wilson and was born December 23 1876 in Avoca Iowa. He built farm magazines into a readership surpassing a million. He was once considered a presidential candidate and attributed health decline to political stress.
The Optenbergs left here about a month ago by automobile, ending a short stay.
Gerald Rhea of Crawfordsville visits the home of R E Rhea in Sigourney and plans to return home after a week long stay.
Letts Independents meet Washington Indies at 2:30 at Washington Ball Park two miles west on Primary Road No. 1. The previously rained-out game with Winfield is postponed, promising a fast, close contest with Washington's speedy players. The local squad hosts Columbus Junction on July 4 during the Legion celebration.
Keota residents learned that the town well in the west part of the city was dynamited to boost water supply. The well, sunk a decade ago during a mains extension, previously had large flow but now runs dry quickly. City engineer M. W. Norris and waterworks superintendent A. M. Rickerd oversaw the operation using thirty sticks of dynamite.
Fred W Welt dies Monday night in Oklahoma City while attending a national Travelers Protective Association convention. He led hotel operations in Washington and Burlington, chaired the hotels committee, and was active in Rotary and Knights of Columbus. Funeral services are at St James Catholic Church with burial in Elm Grove.
A Maytag Washer dealers and salesmen convention will be held tonight at Scott Co. furniture store with a seven o clock banquet at Art's Cafe. J A Handel will attend as guest. Hesselman funds the banquet to honor record Maytag sales in the district. Thirty will attend from Sigourney Oskaloosa Wapello Columbus Junction Grinnell with their wives and guests.
A Sunday picnic honored John Bailey after forty five years with Rock Island lines and retirement. Ed Sullivan organized the event at Sunset park, moved to city hall due to weather, with Mrs. Ed Sullivan and Mrs. H. W. Russell leading a committee. About 125 employees and families attended, Bailey received a $120 envelope from co workers, and children performed musical numbers and early family tributes.
Sixty six crates containing 2250 homing pigeons were released in four waves from Rock Island station Sunday morning. Birds belonged to four sportsman clubs from Moline and Fruitland, each pigeon valued between 25 and 200 dollars, with the crowd watching as birds dispersed toward home.
Dr. S. H. Bateman prominent Washington physician died Monday night in a Burlington hospital while en route to Centralia Illinois to visit relatives. He was 46, survived by wife Ida Bailey and a brother, with funeral to be held in Centralia. He had practiced in Washington since 1916 after graduating from the National University of Arts and Science at St. Louis.
The Greater Isler Shows travel in a twenty car train and will be in Washington for the week July 2 to 7. Louie Isler supervises the attractions with the tour, and the local American Legion backs the appearance. Five riding devices and more than ten other shows travel with concessions. Legion members will staff ticket booths and supervise the stay, with exhibitions on the public square around Central Park.
Washington youths are applying for admittance to the Citizens Military Training Camp at Ft Des Moines in August. Transport, board, clothing, medical and dental care are provided. Colonel Lindbergh endorses the camps and urges youth to attend. Applications available from Lt J Elliot Grayson at the Washington Democrat-Independent office.
The Robbins Bros 4 Ring Circus announces a two day Washington engagement on Thursday July 12 featuring two mammoth pageants Santa Claus in Fairyland and Historic Review of America. Acts include elephants camels reindeer and dancing horses with hundreds of staff and animals in a grand street parade setup.
The Royal Neighbors of Washington County convene in session at the local Y M C A community room. The program includes registration, greetings, a 12 o'clock dinner adjournment, afternoon and evening sessions with speeches, drum and drill, readings, music, initiation, question box, and closing ceremony led by visiting members from Wellman Riverside Kalona Brighton and Ainsworth Camps.
Crawfordsville will celebrate the opening of a half mile of new paving tomorrow evening. Mayor H L Gingery invites all residents to attend the official street opening from north of the Burlington tracks to the city limits. The paving marks Crawfordsville as the first county town to receive its share of the million dollar road program. A Crawfordsville band concert and American Legion drum corps will perform as roads to the celebration lead to town.
