Trains Collision Kills Messenger, Injures Six Near Rock Island
A Minneapolis & St. Louis freight rammed a Rock Island passenger train at a junction near Rock Island Iowa. Eli Meyers 55 of Oelwein died from a fractured skull. Six others including Marie Hockman Simon Marquess M C Taylor J W Stonebraker and Mrs Ellen J Bisbee were hospitalized with injuries. Both trains misjudged open blocks at the crossing and the freight struck the baggage car splitting it in two.

Mrs Haney Dies at Fort Madison
Mrs. Oscar Haney of Fort Madison died after a few days illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Keosauqua. She is survived by her husband four sons Ned Dick Russell and Gordon and a daughter Dora. The Haney family moved from Washington to Fort Madison about four years ago.

Welfare worker arrives to start duties in county
Chairman Carl W Klein of the Washington county emergency relief committee announced Miss Alice Teeple is expected Monday June 24 to begin welfare work in the county. Woman Escapes Injury After Gas Range Explosion
Mrs E M Taylor 83 of Ames escaped serious injury when her gas range exploded as escaping gas was ignited by the primer. The blast shattered several windows and ripped two doors from their hinges.

The Iowa Farm Debt Advisory Council reports that in eight months of 1934 the committee averted 8057 farm mortgage foreclosures, handling 7151 cases totaling 60.272 million dollars and settling 1773 with 4.687 million in reductions. Art and Cecil Ayres of Iowa City were sentenced to ten years for breaking and entering and five years for larceny in Missouri ac counts tied to five burglaries including the L. C. Miller jewelry store caper in Wellman last April. Lee Blakely received five years for larceny. Supervisors Award Rock Surfacing Contract to Wahl
Washington county supervisors approved a $31,673.05 rock surfacing contract with E. D. Wahl of Victor Iowa at a special meeting. Wahl’s bid replaces lower bids rejected at last Friday’s letting, includes $3,460.08 credit for rock crushing equipment, and covers 26 616 cubic yards of crushed rock for more than twelve miles of roads.
