Board delays sale of Old Lincoln Building to August first
Washington board of education will not sell the Old Lincoln school on South Town avenue until August first to allow local groups a chance to bid for future public use. If no offer comes, the building may be sold for wrecking. The Wallace building on East Washington was sold to Gerdes Wrecking of Lincoln for 550 dollars, bringing total to 955 for two buildings. Centennial earlier sold for 405. Wrecking on Centennial has begun. Wallace demolition will follow. Heights property on North Second avenue remains unsold along with the two lots on South Second.

Johnston family obtains Fuller farm under tenant purchase plan
Holly E Johnston of Crawfordsville buys the 80 acre Fuller farm southeast of Crawfordsville. Hayden Thomas will operate it. The purchase, the fourth under Washington county tenant purchase, costs 5600 dollars with a forty year loan at 3 percent. The Johnstons plan to market all farm output through livestock and pay about 100 dollars less annually than rent.

Veteran Engineer on Burlington Dies
Claude Pierce longtime Burlington railroad engineer and former Washington resident died Sunday in Burlington. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm in Winfield Presbyterian church. The Pierce family moved to Winfield years ago for the railway route. he previously ran between Washington and Burlington. He had been retired on a pension and lived with his daughter in law in Burlington during illness. He is survived by his wife and one grandchild.

Dale Minick Died Friday at 37 in Washington
Lester Dale Minick, 37, died Friday at 2 am in his parents home at 514 West Second Street after a two week illness from bronchial pneumonia. Private funeral held Sunday 4 pm at Jones funeral home with Rev I Fred Mund. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by parents Ralph and Leonora Waters Minick and brother Robert. He was born Washington May 22, 1903 and worked as a steam fitter in Washington and Michigan before returning to assist in contracting work. He attended Washington High School and was a Baptist church member.

The Boone family radio artists from Des Moines, a six member musical clan, will present a devotional program Friday June 21 at the Church of Christ in Washington. The free service starts at 7:30 P M in the church auditorium with the Home Builders Sunday school class hosting. The Boones, heard daily on WHO at 6 15 A M, play seven instruments and perform solos duets trios and quartets of hymns southern songs spirituals ballads and sacred pieces. They have broadcast from Des Moines since November 1 1937 after moving from Grand Rapids Michigan and have received mail from 43 states and Canada.

Church Coping Renewal At Methodist Building Costs Five Thousand
Members of the Methodist church are spending about $5,000 to renew the concrete coping atop the exterior walls after sections of stone fell away. L. Willits, as committee chairman, estimates five weeks for completion with Karl Woods of Ainsworth as contractor. Work progresses on the west and east sides, with fronts to follow, using poured concrete and steel reinforcement to prevent future damage. The church, erected in 1912 for $100,000, will look better and be safer once the project finishes.

Mrs Mary A McAvoy Dies World War Mother in Washington
Mrs Mary A McAvoy aged over 80 died Saturday at her home 631 South Avenue C after a brief illness. She was a World War Gold Star mother, mother of Dewey McAvoy of the 168th Infantry killed July 27 1918 at Chateau Thierry, and Vernon McAvoy killed in a Des Moines railroad accident August 8 1988. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery after services by Rev William M Nichol United Presbyterian Church. Surviving children include Mrs Arthur Mosenfelder Rock Island Mrs H B Ramsey Hutchinson Kan Mrs Emma Brown Mt Pleasant Charles McAvoy Washington and two stepchildren Lee McAvoy West Chester and Mrs Anna Chance Washington. There are eight grandchildren.

Central Park will host ten Sunday evening church services starting June 30 and ending September 1. The plan was approved by the city ministerial association at the YMCA, each service led by a different minister with congregations handling music and ushers. Brighton Man Taken by Death
George Lechner, born 1864 in Germany, died Thursday morning at Washington Court Hospital after three weeks in failing health. He lived in Donnellson and Winfield before settling in Brighton in 1884 and worked fifty years for the C B Q railroad, retiring in 1988. Survived by his wife Elizabeth Melliney and five children, among others, with twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
