Wayland and Washington plan a Tuesday evening celebration on June 22 to mark the completion of an all weather highway linking the towns. A Wayland venue will host a detailed program with speakers bands orchestras and an evening dance. A Washington Chamber of Commerce committee joins Wayland’s to plan events.
Twenty one truck drivers arrested by State Patrolman Richard Hohl faced overloading charges for hauling heavier loads than their licenses allowed. Justice J. Bovee levied court costs and driven up license fees, with ten drivers paying higher licenses totaling over 1000 dollars in some cases. Several drivers lacked proper licenses or registration certificates, delaying proceedings.

Wayland Mrs Harmon Weaver died Friday afternoon in Henry county hospital Mt Pleasant after attempting suicide with an old fashioned razor. She lived most of her life in Wayland and is survived by her husband and several children Mrs Jess Davison Mrs Rob Hart Homer Mrs H C Brooks and Mrs Arthur Wyse among others with siblings and two brothers deceased.
Wellman American Legion prepares a county Legion night at Oakwood pavilion with a program led by Frank Miles of Des Moines. The event includes brass quartet music, readings, singing, an address, followed by a Fritz orchestra dance and refreshments.

The Washington county board of supervisors approves continuing the county health unit for another year starting July 1 1938. The plan allocates up to 3200 dollars from county funds, 477.67 dollars overdrawn to be refunded, and secures 6150 dollars in federal support for the year plus continuation of the maternity unit with federal funds. Dr E L Walsh, in charge since April, is elected director and will remain in charge.
The Washington public school board elected new teachers for next year after resignations. Leis Moore of Plainfield Iowa will replace Barbara Sawyer at the junior high. Eoma Clemans will not return and Florence Jobstetter of Tipton is named as her successor. The health of Clemans is poor and she has not announced her plans. Supt. E A Ralston said the teaching staff for next year is now complete unless further withdrawals occur before September.
Nearly four tons of wool dumped onto Mt Pleasant Street when a Cassell Fur Co truck from Davenport Iowa broke from its chassis and overturned. Driver J Ziezenfuss escaped unharmed in the incident on Monday afternoon.
Washington County Medical Society supports a sustained Health Wait program funded by State and Federal money to prevent illnesses, improve child education access, and ensure mothers and babies receive top care. Local doctors back the plan, with growth tied to ongoing physician involvement.
Washington County agricultural conservation committee relays a memo from Claude Wickard directing that oats barley flax cut for hay may have up to ten percent kernels beyond milk stage, while wheat rye emmer speltz are limited to milk stage. A seven year old boy was injured when he and a neighbor rode on a city garbage wagon driven by Willis Beatty and were knocked off after a rut on South Third avenue. The left thigh was fractured and the boy was taken to the hospital on a cot provided by neighbor Charles Root. No motor vehicle was involved. The driver reported the incident to the sheriff's office.
Mrs. Floyd Harvey broke her arm and suffered a head rash in a Sunnight crash while returning from Davenport with her husband. Their car upset in a ditch seven miles east of West Liberty. Both were treated. Mrs. Harvey sent to Washington county hospital then sent home. Mr. Harvey had a minor knee injury.
County Agent W J Roudabush says farmers must secure poison bait to combat grasshopper invasion. He notes recent failures so far and urges townships to organize efforts for the attack to protect crops.
All conservation committee members who also serve on the grasshopper emergency committee will coordinate with the county agent to arrange a demonstration.
William Kraemer of Brighton High School captured first honors in general science at the state brain derby held in Town City. Miream Stannard won third place honors in biology. Other Brighton students, Jean Eyestone Gordor Stout Harvey Spielman Myrtle Crandall and Jean Veseer, also wrote the tests.
At the first board meeting since reorganization, John Winga as president and Leigh Soule announced next years committees. The list includes Endowment Publicity Religious Matron Boy's work Service Membership Educational Social Industrial Foreign work and more with numerous named members.
A severe wind storm swept through town Sunday morning causing extensive tree damage, toppling maple trees onto homes and streets, with the worst near West Third and North Iowa avenues. Debris, toppled limbs, and damaged power lines disrupted services, repaired by Monday. no injuries reported.
Annual election of the Knights of Columbus lodge was held in the KC hall. Paul R. Horak was reelected grand knight. Mrs Tana Anderson of Humboldt and her twin sister Mrs Yanna Gilde of Yakima Washington plan to celebrate their fifty third birthday together this Friday. They were born in the Netherlands and are both widows.
Orville Foss, manager of the Modern Appliance store here, buys a partnership in the Mr Pleasant outlet and plans to move Monday. Mrs Vorheis owns two Modern Appliance stores in Fairfield and Mt Pleasant. Mr Foss will run the Mr Pleasant store and the Foss family resides at 621 North Second Avenue.
Washington reports the treasury awarded a postoffice construction contract for Sigourney Iowa to Bonded Construction Company of New York City at a bid of 49300 dollars.
