A hard windstorm struck Washington Tuesday evening from nine to twelve, bringing about 146 inches of rainfall record and causing limb damage, wire breaks, and scattered porch damage in the northeast and southwest. City crews cleared streets, repaired poles and lines, and power and telephone services were restored by Wednesday evening.

Government weather records report May rainfall totaling 1.61 inches with a peak on May 11 of .64 inch. The month saw a high of 88 degrees on the 28th and a low of 34 on the 4th. Fourteen days had measurable rain, ten were clear, six partly cloudy, and twelve were cloudy.
Washington Janitors Attend Fairfield Short Course
Several of Washington's janitors plan to attend a short course in Fairfield today through Saturday. Classes are at Fairfield High School and cover heating lighting sanitation and grounds care. Community engineers L J Murphy and Royal H Holbrook of Iowa State College will teach the historic program in state history.

J. H. Warren dies after yearlong illness in Washington
Joseph Henry Warren 56 died at 904 West Main Washington this morning at 5 20 after a year of illness. He was a prominent local businessman, moving from Belle Plaine Iowa in 1912 to run a series of grocery stores and later the Warren Seed Store. Surviving are his widow two children mother and two sisters and a granddaughter. Funeral at 2 p m Saturday from the West Main residence with Dr W W Bowers officiating. Burial in Elm Grove.

Washington residents witnessed a curious hybrid as a buggy chassis pulled by two horses carried the body of an old Ford, top up for wet weather. The odd device, a combine between a Ford and a buggy, sparked talk that the old reliables are still in use and may be paid for.

Auto Race Sunday Aids City Fund in Washington
The city treasurer benefited from a Sunday auto race on North Marion avenue between Raymond Chalupa driving a Chevrolet and Clement Chalupa in a Whippet. Both refused to admit the winner before Mayor John Applegate, who fined each ten dollars plus costs. The mayor says the fund is twenty dollars ahead in clear profit and hopes drivers respect speed limits and others' rights to keep funds growing.
