Fr id night the rural eighth graders received diplomas signaling completion of county school courses. County Supt. Lester B. Krabill presided at the crowded Methodist church graduation with Richard H. McCleery of Washington delivering “The Trumpeter” address urging students to finish what they start. Maxine Adams presented top grades awards to Mary Ellen Duensing and Evelyn Peck with shared banner honors for their schools. Cash prizes for Roger Williams essays were awarded to Willard Patterson and Norma Rose Kos. The event featured rural chorus and a piano duet as the audience heard prayers and benediction.

Funeral services held for Jorge L. Duke at Washington Baptist Church
Jorge L. Duke died suddenly at his Maquoketa home. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Washington Baptist Church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was 71, born March 15, 1867, in Henderson County UK, and survived by his wife Minnie and numerous children and grandchildren. Burial followed at Elm Grove.
Philip K Haney Dies in Kansas at 25
Philip Kent Haney 25 died at 4 a m Saturday in Topeka Kansas after a five year illness. His body was brought to Washington on the Rock Island and services will be held Tuesday at the Christian church with Rev Vernon H Carter. Burial is Elm Grove cemetery. He was born December 9 1912 in Washington, son of David N and Martha Bosley Haney. Surviving are his mother in Topeka four brothers S DPD of Los Angeles Neil Kenneth of Topeka and Lynn of Moline and three sisters Mrs F D Letts of Washington D C Mrs Olva Smith of Topeka and Mrs Ennis Shaw of Washington.

Walter Jackson Gardner aged 66 died Wednesday at his home 601 East Jefferson Washington after a long illness. Funeral services were held Friday at 2:30 at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev Vernon H. Carter and Odd Fellows involved at Elm Grove cemetery. Gardner born November 18 1881 in Blount County Tennessee lived in Iowa since age two, married Edna Signfoose March 1 1905, survived by wife two children Walter Elwyn Gardner and Florence B Donaldson, three grandchildren, brother Oscar Gardner and sister Mrs Thomas E Nicholson. He belonged to Pleasant Hill Church of Christ and was active in its choir, and was a member of Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges.

Charles Hays Hart Injured in California Car Crash
Charles Hays Hart, former Washington resident now in California, is recovering from injuries after a Fresno car crash. He was riding with a friend when a man rushing his hospitalbound son ran a stop sign and struck their vehicle. Hart suffered two broken ribs bruises and a punctured lung. he remains laid up for several weeks.

More than 200 boys and girls joined daily vacation Bible schools at three Washington churches starting Monday. Samuel Pulver Dies at 77 After Long Illness
Samuel M. Pulver aged 77 died Wednesday at his home 222 Main St after four to five years of ill health and seven months bedridden. Born February 25 1865 in Dutch Creek township he lived in Duteh Creek Franklin and Seventy Six townships before moving to Washington seventeen years ago. He married Mary Bennett January 13 1887 they observed a wooden wedding last year. Funeral services were at United Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev William M. Wniehol Jr and burial followed at Keota. he was a longtime member of United Presbyterian Church.
