Washington county primary narrows to decisive sheriff race
Washington county voters offered light turnout yet produced decisive party nominations. Sheriff candidates Charles M. Denison and Walter Edwards led a tight contest, with Denison winning 1724 to 1610. Democratic sheriff hopeful Earl Jackson crossed over by a narrow margin of 283 to 232 over Oramel Stoner. Other races included Geo. W. Morrison winning county attorney, Belle Rice retaining county recorder, Edna Purvis winning deputy clerk, and Chas. O. Dayton defeating Chas. S. Cummings for state representative. Overall, several incumbents were renominated with large margins while some precincts reported late.

The Washington Independent organizes its 10th season opener against the Burlington K C at the hometown ball park. Opening game set for Sunday at 2 30 PM features Stebbins on the mound and a strong battery with a Kelsey on receiving duties. The squad, under manager Boone, plans Sunday games, mostly at home, to showcase a solid defense and seasoned practice.

Federated Women's Clubs to Meet Here in June

Mrs. Nora Dewey died Tuesday at her South Marion Avenue home after a cerebral hemorrhage. Born December 17, 1860 near Cumberland Maryland, she lived in the community since 1867 and leaves son A Claire Dewey of Washington and sister and brother survivors. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church today at 2 30 led by Dr F W Eastwood.

John J. Bailey of Washington Iowa retired on a pension May 31 after 55 years and three months of service with Rock Island Railroad Lines. Death of Lewis Mast at Washington County Hospital
Lewis Mast died Tuesday morning at Washington County Hospital after a three week illness and a final operation. He was 37, born in Crawford Township, son of Henry and Mary Mast. He married Jemina Lance on February 25, 1915. they lived on the old Mast place and later moved to the local community. He leaves his widow, his Wayland parents, and two brothers Paul and Gladden. a daughter had died. Funeral services were held at the home two miles south of the city.
