Memorial Day Honors At Woodlawn And Elm Grove Cemeteries
Memorial Day services and grave decorations honored nearly 400 soldiers from all wars buried at Woodlawn and Elm Grove. D C Nolan of Iowa City and Dean Harland Mead spoke as decorating committees led by the Women’s Relief Corps and various veterans groups placed flowers on 148 and 242 graves respectively. The procession featured Washington high school and Municipal bands, Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, and about 60 Legion members marching behind a color guard and drum corps. Weather drew thousands to the events and prayers were offered by local ministers.

John Philip Woods born December 10, 1936, died after a ten day illness of pneumonia at 12:20 PM at the home of his grandparents 1025 North Second Avenue. Funeral services were Sunday at 3 PM at Sherman's Funeral Home with Dr. Arthur Atack officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was survived by his parents Ralph and Maurine Woods, three brothers Theodore Russell Rodney Benn and Allen Lee Woods, and grandparents on both sides.
