The United Presbyterian Church reports a Christmas offering of 508.93 with 408.05 to the white gift for world needy aid and 100 retained locally. The program on Christmas Eve by the Bibles includes a play Why the Chimesnee and music.
James Casey and Curt Wells, both Wellman area youths, were injured Saturday when a car driven by Wells veered near Keota. Casey suffered a dislocated shoulder and facial injuries. Wells had a head cut and knee injuries. Harold Fountain of Wellman also reported minor injuries from a separate collision between Wellman and Alona.
The Municipal band performs a varied New Year program at the YMCA with new marches overtures and solos by John Yousling on accordion and John Lloyd Hughes on “Out on the Deep” and Don Boyer singing two numbers with band backing “Man with the Mandolin” and “South of the Border.” The full band features members home for holidays and the program runs from 2 to 4 in the east lobby inviting community attendance.
Don Radda of Washington county won two firsts and tied for another at WHO Des Moines contest earning $14 in cash and a gold fruit owl. His entries included the longest ear and most unusually shaped ear with a 15 3 4 inch length and a heavy ear weighing 1 pound 9 ounces. He led the seven divisions with the most points and announced display of prizes in Nicola Harmon store window.
The county assessors will hold their annual meeting Saturday at the courthouse. They will receive supplies and instructions and begin work after the second Monday in January. Next year they will tax personal property instead of real estate.
Sam T Donahey of Washington received a mini mail sack souvenir from Santa Claus Indiana. Inside were pictures of Dale residents who sent letters as 24 extra clerks handled Christmas mail in the past week. Donahey has visited Dale many times.
Funeral services for Mrs. L L Neiswanger former Crawfordsville and Washington resident were held in a Crawfordsville Methodist church with Dr R C Keagy officiating, burial followed in Crawfordsville cemetery. Pallbearers included nephews and their sons from Riverside and nearby communities. The 72 year old widow survived a prior stroke and had resided with her son Victor and daughter Mrs Frank Taylor in Elgin.
Frank Webb, 82, former Washington business man, died at home in Los Angeles at 1 45 Sunday morning after months of ill health and a recent minor operation. Survived by wife Edna Webb Koon, daughter Barbara Koon, and nephew Charles Ragap. he was a longtime livery stableman and former owner with early work for Kenry Sanford and later George H. Paul before moving to Los Angeles in 1912.
Relatives in Washington report the death of John R. Cooper at Longmont Colorado on December 18. Born January 2 1843 in Washington he served three years in the Civil War then moved from Kansas to Colorado. He leaves three sons James Downers Creek TL Mart California Charles Stainfield Kansas and a sister Mrs May Cooper Weirich. Funeral services were held in Longmont.
Mr and Mrs John Westen and Mrs Martin Westen of Havre attended the funeral of Mrs Andrew Westen a cousin in Emden Illinois Wednesday.
John Winga, president of the Y M C A, announced committees for the twelfth annual New Year's open house of the Y W C A and Mi Ci As. Last year drew a thousand attendees with many communities observing the custom. Committee chairs include Reception Cloud Willits and Checkers Serel Taylor with exhibits by John Applegate and Dave Elder.
A large barn and most contents were destroyed by fire on the Eli White farm two miles west of Columbus City about 1 o'clock Saturday morning. Ten cattle five horses 200 bushels of corn 300 bushels of oats and fifteen tons of timothy hay were lost. other buildings were saved with help from local fire trucks. The Whites had insurance on all losses.
The annual Washington firemen's ball is announced for January 16. Tickets are on sale through fire department members with net receipts benefiting the department sick and death fund. Committee chair Charles M. Denison lists James Casey Bob Roe Bill Brown and Claude Reister Jr as members. Court Hussey orchestra will provide the music.
Ed Simmering completes purchase of the Casey building on North Iowa avenue, home to the Casey restaurant, from C. J. Jungebluth and C. C. Wilson. He will take possession at year’s start and no remodeling is planned. the Casey cafe will continue as before.
The Washington county dental society elected officers at the monthly meeting in the North Side cafe. Dr. T. J. Pease became president, Dr. Clarence Wyse of Wayland was named vice president, and Dr. M. J. Cruise was re elected as secretary treasurer after dinner. A program plan discussion followed.
A 12th annual YWCA Christmas party featured gifts, crafts, and a Santa visit for eager children. Volunteers organized program acts, plays, and music, while the city hall helpers collected toys and donations from clubs and shops.
A donor gave 490 dollars to the United Presbyterian Church of Washington for the choir and music program. The anonymous gift, revealed at a noon vesper service, is described as a greatly appreciated Christmas present to aid the congregation’s music services.
Theodore Ward, veteran railway man, died in Jacksonville Florida. He worked 20 years as a Rock Island passenger conductor and 31 years with Illinois Central. Born September 27 1858 in Mt Vernon New York he leaves his wife and daughter Gertrude Ward. Burial requested in Washington. Body arrived at L A Jones funeral home.
Nellie Pearl Been blossom Lins, born October 26 1884 in Washington, died at 8 15 PM Thursday at her Cotter area home two miles north of Cotter after two years illness. She married Edwin Lins February 22 1905 and is survived by her husband two sons Richard Iowa City and Howard at home one brother Howard Been blossom north of Ainsworth and three grandchildren. Funeral at Ainsworth Methodist Church followed by burial at Elm Grove Cemetery with L A Jones in charge.
J C Forinash a West Chester native died suddenly at 4 40 am at his Conesville home after a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral at Jones funeral home Thursday 7 30 pm body sent to Salem Mo for burial. Born May 24 1886 in Mendalia W Va son of David H and Mary Bragg Forinash. Survived by father Raymondville Mo four children Villa Duane Lavone Ruth two brothers Fred and Ray and a sister Mrs W M Conley. Mrs Forinash died in 1920.
An anonymous donor allocated funds to support church music, giving $100 to the choir director Miss Carolyn Hamilton and smaller amounts to soloists for the Christmas cantata as well as to the organist and pianist. Part of the total was set aside to develop choir members musical abilities, especially those showing promise, with a separate substantial check for Mrs Nichol, wife of Rev William Nichol.
Fifty petit jurors and ten grand jurors were drawn for the January 1940 term of the Washington County District Court. The term opens January 15 with Judge Frank Bechly presiding. Grand jurors report January 16 and petit jurors January 22 unless notified otherwise.
At a Wednesday meeting in the courthouse the Washington County Beef Producers Association was reorganized with Joe Knotek elected president Richard Stephens named vice president William Zager as secretary and treasurer. Board members include C L Stannard Hazel Huston Tom Carris and Pete Schneider. Rex Beresford of Iowa State College spoke noting the need for improved feeding and selling of cattle to boost beef production in 1940. M Nichol pastor of the United Presbyterian church is mentioned.
