Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant for Dan Klopfenstein formerly of Washington who died after a two week illness. Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery Mt. Pleasant. He was a noted farm machinery salesman who traveled abroad on sales trips. Survived by his wife a niece Miss Peggy Klopfenstein four brothers and two sisters.
Mr and Mrs E K Orris received a nine foot silver tip spruce from their son Arthur and family in Wisconsin for Christmas. Arthur grows trees on his farm and shipped the tree wrapped in burlap by truck.

Delbert Maxwell and wife visit Merle Enfield home. Orie Enfield visits Merle Enfield. Grant Griffiths spends Tuesday in Washington. Grover Booth visits near Ainsworth.
People gathered at the Latimer Davis residence on Sunday afternoon. Sunday dinner guests at the Lyman Johnson home near Olds included Mrs. J. E. Lemley James Lemley and the Schlatter family. Mrs. Harry Jones marked her birthday on Thursday.
The Washington board of education awarded a contract Friday to Dougher Rich Woodburn of Des Moines to prepare preliminary sketches for a new Heights grade school. The firm, noted for Iowa public schools, previously designed Creston and Hampton buildings and Jones county court house at Anamosa. Final plans and cost estimates will follow, then an election on the bond issue.
Four Washington churches hosted Christmas programs to large crowds with song, solo and instrumental numbers, candlelight services, and festive decorations. Notable contributors included Mrs Edith Reister, Mrs Frank Coles, Owen Hayes, and the Rev T F Fredmund, with offerings supporting church social services.

Columbus Junction locals hold a community Christmas program Tuesday at 7 20 pm on Matin Street by the big tree with carol singing and a treat for every child. Columbus schools close Dec 24 and reopen Jan 3. Cairo teachers Miss Helen Grim and Miss Alice Briggs lead the Cairo program Tuesday evening at the Cairo school. A Christmas vesper service is planned at 4 45 pm Sunday at the Methodist church under Mrs William Kainn’s direction.
Ice slick Iowa streets slowed travel and contributed to only four highway fatalities in the week. The state's 1937 toll rose to 531, up from 506 a year earlier, with four new names added to the list.

Mrs Warren Davis reports a quiet weekend with visits to West Chester Keota Sigourney and Kalona. Attendees include Walter Wishes Bobbie Bell Alec Gillies and the William Martin family along with local families and neighbors. A coasting party is noted and hospital x rays for Alec Gillies.
Funeral services for John N. Ramsey were held Friday at two o clock in the Keota Methodist church with burial in Keota cemetery. He died on his 76th birthday after a long illness, having been homebound for a year. Ramsey, born in Illinois, grew up in Keota and became a pharmacist in the local drug store. He was married to Mae Newton. they had a daughter Lilly who died at 12. He leaves his wife, a brother, three sisters in Wisconsin, Keota, and Amarillo.
Mrs Winmer Green wife of Harry Green of northeast of Keota near Wellman died in University hospital Iowa City on Thursday She leaves her husband one son Glenn her father George Hanlon and one sister Mrs Frank Pulver of near Keota Born about 50 years ago she was a native of Washington county Funeral services were held at the Muareh funeral home in Keota Saturday afternoon at 2 30 with burial in Keota cemetery
In Des Moines four young men from six states were named Rhodes Scholars nominees including Courtney Smith, 21, Iowa City. Edward Weissmiller, 22, Mount Vernon. Harry D. Flory, 20, Pawnee City Nebraska. and Gerald L. Brown, 21, Chamberlain South Dakota.
Des Moines December 18. Charles D Huston announces 16 new internal revenue collection offices in Iowa. One will be in Washington with others in Keokuk and Clinton to improve convenience. No new staff will be hired. current personnel will be redistributed among the new offices.
Night officer Jack Creech interrupted a burglary at the State theater early Sunday morning. Burglars had forced a safe knob, but escaped before police arrived. guards were posted and an outside car seen leaving the scene. The theater manager said little potential loss occurred due to the secure safe.
Dee 21 Leigh Soule gave the address at Bethel Sunday with about 45 present. A Christmas program and tree is set for Wednesday at 7 30 pm. The community is invited. Miss Betty McCartney visited, and Mrs. Floyd Letts has recovered from tooth pain.
Secretary O O kK Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce announced that Washington business houses will close all day Christmas. Food stores barber shops and other square area shops close though drug stores and restaurants keep usual hours. Post office mail deliveries cease. Stores stay open evenings this week for last minute shoppers. Crowds fill streets as Christmas trade surges after road delays last week.
Mrs. Charles McMullen aged 62 died Saturday at 3 AM in Mount Pleasant hospital after bronchial pneumonia. Born Louise Ellen Shrader in Washington County, she married Charles McMullen in 1896 and lived in Mount Pleasant for about eighteen years. Surviving are her husband, mother, six children, seven siblings, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
State theater will host a free children's party in Washington on Friday morning December 24. Manager Ralph Pratt announced the annual event, moving from Christmas morning to the day before, with doors open 9:30 to 9:45. Mickey Rooney in The Hoosier School Boy will be shown.
