Friday night the Washington County Taxpayers League adopted a constitution and named an executive committee to organize further. A meeting of the full committee is planned for Tuesday at 1 PM, with a general meeting Friday at 1 PM at City Hall to report action.
Services were held for Isabella Brown Moore McCandless at Woodlawn Cemetery beside her husband Captain Isaiah G. Moore who died in 1870. The obituary notes her family ties to Rev James Brown and her move to Keokuk Iowa with children, with Annie Belle Allison as the surviving daughter in Lincoln Nebraska. The United Presbyterian Bible school staged a Christmas program titled Christmas Around the World. Scenes from Holland, Norway, Germany, and Mexico depicted the first Christmas in Judea with shepherds and angels. Lawrence McKune is back home from the University of Iowa to spend the Christmas vacation with family. He arrived on campus and will enjoy the holiday season locally.
E. Cline, longtime manager, will move to Iowa City to open a McCormick Deering dealership at the start of January. George Shanklin, formerly with the Burlington International, becomes Washington plant manager. Cline plans relocation in coming weeks. Kenneth to enroll at the state university.
Iowa teachers associations meeting in Des Moines endorsed the proposed education laws in the legislative committee on reducing government expenditures report. Melvin Gingerich and Prof I H Hart outlined a plan to raise teaching certification standards and organize more local teachers clubs to back the reforms.
Firemen were called Friday to the Montgomery Ward & Co building after a fire started in a joist on the second floor. The blaze spread from a stove into the joist and flue of the Washington Cleaners, creating smoke and brief excitement. The fire was extinguished without water, and the final damage estimate will come in a few days.
Wesley Smith died yesterday at the Robert McCaleb home on Madison street after a stroke left him helpless. He was born October 26, 1844 in Ohio, lived in Dutch Creek township, moved to Washington in 1908, and to Medford, Oregon, in 1926 before returning a year ago. He leaves one son Sidney Smith of Washington and one brother Marion Smith of Aerton, Iowa. Private funeral services will be Thursday at 2 PM at Sherman’s funeral home, burial in New Haven cemetery.
Hart states only two states have lower legal qualifications for teaching than Iowa and the proposed law would bring Iowa to the national average for teacher certificates. He notes no immediate economic effects but potential for improved teaching. Washington county representatives at the meeting included Mrs. Winnie Palmer of the Superintendents and Principals' club.
The Fortnightly club music department presents a Christmas vacation concert Monday December 26 at the United Presbyterian Church. College students from nearby towns and Washington will perform. No admission charge. a free will offering will be taken to cover expenses.
Ralph Pratt announces a free 10 o clock show for Washington school children and surrounding districts on Monday December 26 at the State theater. Other country pupils will be admitted free as a Christmas treat.

Washington YMCA defeated Muscatine Grafil club 85 to 21 after a tight game on the Muscatine Y court. Ahrens led Washington with six field goals and two free throws while Huber topped Muscatine with eleven points.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Zaring were held at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. F. C. Witzigman presiding. Born Harriet Hageman Hageman in Bushnell Illinois January 29 1860 she and her husband opened jewelry stores in Brighton and Washington. Surviving son Glen and four grandchildren, plus three brothers and one sister.
Four hundred pounds of sausage from four hogs donated by farmers in the Dutch Creek area is being processed at the County Home and distributed to needy families under Mrs. Della Miller's supervision. The plan has wide support with Rev C W Klein and Ralph Scott transporting hogs to the county farm for butchering. Communities beyond Washington also receive the aid and more contributions are welcomed including corn meal and bushels of corn to make meal.
Fire at about 2 PM Thursday damaged an overstuffed chair and rug in the second floor apartment of Miss Mary Welch and Miss Helen Hamilton at Mrs Marion D Work's home. Officials believe a short in an electric wire started the blaze, which was extinguished by the city fire department with limited damage and anticipated insurance coverage.
Rev. FE. W. Eastwood and Rev. C. S. Williams attended a called meeting of the Iowa City Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Davenport on Monday.
Washington public school teachers contribute to a welfare fund and Good Fellows effort. Most funds go to buy shoes for needy children through Mrs. D. P. Sherman while a portion funds Christmas dinners for families via the Good Fellows. Initiated by Melvin Gingerich and Supt. J. H. Peet, the drive exceeded its goal with some teachers giving more than one percent of a month’s salary.
St James school pupils gave a Tuesday afternoon program on the last day before Christmas vacation. Santa Claus attended and distributed a treat to about 60 youngsters. Vacations match public schools and work resumes Wednesday morning January 4.
