The Democrat Independent race ends December 24 at 1:00 PM with two prizes a Velie Six Sedan and a Chevrolet Coach. Judges Kerr Davis Applegate will seal the ballot box December 21 and count votes after closing.
The Y basketball squad begins the season with a 8 o'clock game on the Y floor against the Crawfordsville Independents after a curtain raiser at 7 30 between two high school teams. Starters include Kolosick, Weaver, Schulty, Ray Kiesey and Crone. Carlton Rice and Freshwaters are sidelined.
The Christmas Day services feature Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio performed by the church choir directed by Hermann N Schuster at 6 pm with soloists including Mrs Plumbly Mrs Hedges and others. The Cecilian choir of forty joins for place and hospital carol singing after services.
The Washington Democrat Independent will not publish next Tuesday December 27 to grant staff a holiday. Tuesday is declared a legal holiday in the office. Advertisers and news items are asked to call between now and Thursday December 29 to update mailing lists before the next publication.
At a special session in the county courthouse Fardley Bell Jr. was chosen to fill the Board seat left by the death of Dr. W. P. Gardner of Wellman. Mrs. St. Miller was named Washington city overseer for the poor for another year. Jail repairs were ordered to reinforce walls after escape attempts.
The Sunday School of the Methodist Church stages Following the Star at 7:00 PM on Friday. Santa will receive the white gifts for the King after a Bethlehem set pageant about the infant Jesus. Cast includes W C Hedges Roy Finch and many others with Cecilian Choir providing unseen interludes.

John Scannell died last night at 9 30 in the county hospital after a brief illness. He was born June 28 1847 in Ireland and worked as a railroad construction foreman. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at St James Catholic Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus will attend in a body. pallbearers include Joe Lohberger George Wheelan Harry Whittaker Martin Whittaker Frank Kuhn J J McKeene.
County officers drew fifty petit jurors for the January term and twelve grand jurors for the four terms of court in 1928. The long list includes Bertha M. Guther Washington and Claude Flynn Riverside among grand jurors and Joe Piper Washington and Walter Reed Washington among Petit jurors.
