Funeral services for Mrs. L. P. Jackson were held Saturday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home. Burial followed in West Chester cemetery. Minnie H Volgaardsen born December 2 1867 in Wilton Iowa died December 12 1935 in Washington Iowa. She married J R Jackson of West Chester in May 1887 and leaves husband two children Mrs Mabel Plummer and Edward Jackson plus a late daughter Emma Jackson and two grandchildren.

Lost tackle box found as Christmas present
Dr. B F Schwartz received a surprised Christmas present from the National Park Service. While vacationing in Estes Park last July he lost a fishing tackle box with valuable gear. After a two hour search he left the park believing it gone. His name and a New York address were inside. The Park Service later sent the box back, postage paid, and the contents were intact.

Washington county tax bill boosted by state tax
Washington county property owners face a higher tax bill next year as a state tax is reinstated amounting to 84,789.82. The total tax, including all funds, would be 703,028.53, up from 597,890.26, reflecting a 105,138.27 increase with a 20,000 rise from road maintenance funding and small city-towns increases. Funeral services were held for Mrs Freeman Chesley who died Friday afternoon at 4 30 at a West Chester funeral home. She had been bedfast 20 years and ill three weeks. Born December 7 1850 near Washington she later lived in Kansas City and then Washington county. She married Freeman Chesley in 1882 and resided near West Chester. Survived by daughter Mrs Virgil Weekly and son James Chesley plus nieces and nephews.

Brighton Man Survives Narrow Truck Collision
Joe Buzzard of the Buzzard Produce Co. escaped serious injury when his truck was hit by an M and J freight on a Brighton street. The engine struck behind the cab and dragged the truck half a block along the tracks. Buzzard suffered a head cut and a severe hand cut but no other injuries. the vehicle was badly jammed and twisted.

DES MOINES Two Iowa youths and one each from Nebraska and Missouri schools were chosen for Rhodes scholarships. The two Iowa recipients are Edgar W. Timm, 20, of Muscatine a senior at Iowa State College, Ames, and James R. Nelson, 20, of Newton a junior at Oberlin College, Oberlin Ohio.
Four Washington Men Cleared in Freight Depot Robbery
Clarence and Everett Chance Merle Walker and Thomas Deweese, held for investigation in Columbus Junction, were released after Dean Hornaker confessed stealing the money. Hornaker, about 19, was jailed in Louisa county Wanpello. $3 to $4 vanished from the freight office drawer.

Mrs. J T Risk 77 sister of late Sheriff R H McCarty died at 5 20 am Thursday December 12 at 522 West Main Street after five weeks illness including a carbuncle. Funeral 2 pm Saturday at Shermans funeral home conducted by Rev B F Schwartz of the Methodist church. Burial in Brighton cemetery. Born August 10 1858 in Clay near Brichton daughter of Robert and Rebecca McCarty married February 4 1896 to James Thomas Risk. Lived in Keokuk county then Washington since 1907. George Buckley Dies Prominent Advertising Executive
Word came of the death of George Buckley a New York banker from Washington. He died in New York after a heart attack. Buckley was a noted advertising man and long time manager of the Chicago Herald Examiner and later Crowell publications. He was a son of Mr and Mrs John D Buckley and grew up here. His sister Miss Mable Buckley learned of the death as she went to work as a high school teacher.

Snow Storm Grips Roads Causing Minor Crashes
A late Saturday snowstorm made travel hazardous with several cars sliding into ditches. City Plans Bond Sale for Street Improvements
City council approved offering improvement bonds on January 6 at 7 30 PM to fund past season street surfacing. Part of the issue will be sold to cover anticipated special assessments against benefiting property owners, with another portion to cover the city's share. About 1500 has already been collected from assessments as of Tuesday, with many paying in full and those over 10 dollars allowed up to three years to pay.

City Council to Put Franchises to Vote in January Election
The Washington city council approves two ballot propositions to grant gas and electric power franchises to Iowa Southern Utilities Company for 26 years and 16 years respectively.
